Q: Chondro - possible skin condition

Brokk

Hi guys, I took Brokk my Biak GTP baby out to feed yesterday and noticed I white-ish patch on the scales between his eyes and a little bit around his mouth.

At first I thought it was scale damage from squeezing his head into tight spaces, but looking closer I think it might be something on the scales rather than damage.

When it's wet or damp it's really hard to see but when he's been out of the cage and it's dry it really stands out.

I'm worried it could be a fungal infection and hoped one of the experienced Chondro keepers might have seen this before and know what it is and how to treat it.

Thanks,

Aaron.

I've uploaded a picture here of his head a week ago so you can see the difference Brokk

That does look like a possible infection, I'm not a Chondro expert, but I would take him to the vet so they can advise on the best way to treat.

That is normal, and seen on a lot of chondros. The area in question seems to have more fragile scales than anywhere else on the snake, so when they rub to shed, the scales become damaged and the pigment is affect. If you're lucky, it will turn into a yellow spot on his head.

There is no infection.

Has it shed recently?  If it has then I might tend to agree with FyreFocks, as you do see this after a shed on some young snakes.  However since you mention that it disappears when wet and from the pics it almost looks like it has the same "stuff" sprinkled on and around its nostril area, I am not as sure.  I know this might be difficult to do, however does it come off if you rub that spot.  Obviously, if it does turn out to be a growth of some sort you might try lowering your humidity a bit.  Just a thought, because as your pics are very good, it‘s still pretty hard to make out.

According to the tracking it shed a week ago, so I'm definitely confident in my answer.

Yep, I agree.

Ditto to what has been stated.  It is just a rub mark that is often seen in young chondros.  Certainly nothing to worry about and if you plan to get more of these you can expect to see if again.

Thanks for the response guys, He did shed last week and I checked him this morning and it's already looking better (smaller area and less white).  His humidy/temps are fine but I'll keep an eye on it just in case. Laughing

Very common. If it starts to look "off", or consistently like a wound, dry the cage out for a long time. I have neos in tubs that I keep too humid, and rub spots are slow to heal in very humid conditions.

Thanks Aaron, that's really good to hear - I got virtually no info from the breeder about him and Michael suggested he might be farm bred and should be quarantined, which I've done.

He has what looks like a couple of small scars on his body too, maybe from being allowed too close to his heating, so from the start I've been a little concerned about his health.

I'll be watching him closely for any changes.

Here's my very first chondro boy:

Who was a CBB I got as an adult. He rubbed his face raw, and it took a good 2-3 years for those scales to grow back, but never did grow back the same. There was actually some red scale that grew back, which still boggles my mind.

You can see on this boy:

The sore over by the eye is from rubbing. And when kept humid, this type of sore does not heal whatsoever. It needs to dry out, and shed out. Chondros skin will heal very quickly, scale regrowth, ime not so much.
