Q: Any hope for marine toad with strange symptoms?

I have been eyeballing a Marine Toad at a local aquarium/pet store for six months now waiting until I could afford to set up a tank for him. It's just one of those things where I fell in love with the guy immediately. So now I can afford a set up and I got all excited thinking I could finally start preparing for this new buddy, and i went to the pet store to check him out up close and personal (I never did this before because I knew if I touched him I'd want to bring him home asap). So I picked him up and realized there are red bulb-like protrusions all over his feet and lower legs, then I noticed that on one hind foot he is missing most of his toes and one is actually hanging off. This can't be good. I don't believe they have changed the substrate the entire six months he's been there and am wondering if that could be the cause of whatever this is. I didn't notice any stuck shed or any symptoms on the rest of his body, and he's very plump. Does anyone have any experience with this and any idea what it might be and if it can be fixed with vet care? I've gotten kind of attached to this guy over the months and I don't want to give up on him if there's hope. I hate to see him sit there and appear to actually rot. That's so not fair to him. But I also don't want to set myself up for heartbreak and a huge vet bill (done that trying to rescue from pet stores before) if he's likely to die anyways. I'd really appreciate some advice with this if anyone can help. Thanks in advance!

Here's a not so great cell phone picture. It doesn't really show the bumps, but it's his over all appearance.

It could be that the animal is septic. The good news is that Marine toads are usually extremely hardy. Once placed in a healthy environment, and a fecal is taken, you may have hope to save him. Do you have a good vet in your area for herps?

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Mike here. By buying the animal you are only contributing to the pet store's abuse. Now if they were open to giving him to you, that's another story. I'd try to save him if he was free, but when you buy the animal you aren't rescuing it, you're buying it. They will just put a new one in the same conditions while profiting off of it at the same time. I hope this poor guy gets the care he needs regardless though. I'm not well versed in amphibians so I can't really give any advice on whether or not he is saveable or not - but from the picture he doesn't look too far gone to me.

Thanks everyone. Emily, I do have a very good herp vet in my area, so that'll give him a better chance. And I agree with everyones' reasoning when it comes to not supporting the pet store. It's another one of those stores that's a good aquarium, but then they decide they need to start selling reptiles small scale and have no idea what they're doing. Luckily they know me pretty well because I'm also really into fish keeping so hopefully I can negotiate something with them (then boycott their storeLaughing). And Mike, I too understand where you're coming from here. I normally avoid pet store rescues just based on past experience, but I don't know what it is about this guy. If I can save him I have to try. Thanks again!
