Lumpy Corn Snake
|
|
Firstly this is not one of my snakes, but one of the nature centers I volunteer at. I'm sure it's going to need a vet visit but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or imput on the situation. So I guess I'll just start with the basics. The male Corn Snake at the nature center I volunteer at is more or less bloated about 2-3 inches from it's cloaca. The snake has known to be impacted before with mostly mouse fur but was able to pass it at one point. If it was a female I would almost say it was gravid but thats not the case. Also since the lump has appeared the snake has gone off feed, which could also be chalked up to breeding season.
It's housed in a 20L on newspaper with a hot spot of 87 (if I remember correctly, and thats on top of about 13 layers of newspaper >.<). Snake also gets soaked in warm water about once a week. Oh and I would say the snake is atleast 3 years of age.
If anyone has any ideas what so ever that I could relay on please lemme know!
Thanks!

Is there distention past that point at all? Has there been any blood found in the cage? Have you felt the area or know if it's a hard mass or soft and "moves around"?

The distented part is probably about 2 inchs long itself, going away from the cloaca. The day I was there I didn't see any blood in the tank, just urates. I wouldn't say it's hard or soft, more firm with a bit of give and it doesn't really move.

This isn't the one I gave to that nature center is it? If so I would take him to the vet he was in great health before, I bred him a couple weeks before giving him to them, but I'm not sure if that wold effect anything. If it's not the same one I would still take him to the vet just to be safe.

So I am understanding correctly, the lump is below the cloaca / towards the tail?
Either way, what my thought is that he may possibly have a tumor. I say that because it sounds a little too familiar to a couple cases I've had - one was a Boa and one a Rufous Beaked snake, most recently.
I suppose if it's towards the tail it could be related to the hemipenes somehow. But yeah... either way, he likely needs to be evaluated by a vet.

Also corn snake's hot spot shouldn't get to 90 degrees, I would make sure that on the spot he can get to it should be around 82-85, if at the top it's 87 it might be too hot especially if he goes under the newspaper.

@Tiki Nah it's not the one you donated, it's a nature center in my town that has a few herps. Also they are working on getting regulators for all of the heating pads. It's the the one thats on the frits =/.
@Sonja I mean from above the cloaca up towards it's stomach. So yeah that could be a tumor.

Tiki--I've had lots of colubrids regularly use hot spots of 90+ (surface temp, not air temp). Heck, I've temp gunned the road at nearly 90 on some productive road cruising nights :)

The snake could also be fat. Is the lump hard/firm or 'flabby' feeling? How often/how much were you feeding it before the hunger strike?

If he has been impacted by fur before, this is probably what is happening again. It could be a partial impaction to (if he is still passing some fecal matter). A vet visit will tell you for sure, if this is truely the case.

Update: Snake was taken to the vet on monday and it is once again impacted. Right now they are trying to figure out the best course of action to take. Thank you all for the help!
