Q: Cage size for adult veiled chameleon
Posted By:

Herpetology Mermaid

Hey all,

I've preparing to get a chameleon here soon, and even though I'm picking up a baby, and already have a cage prepped for it, I picked up a larger size cage for when he's older.

Would an 18x18x36 be considered large enough got an adult male veiled chameleon? Or is a bigger size recommended?

Those dimensions are probably sufficient. Males get big though and are active... so the bigger the better.  Most people with a lot of cham experience, including myself strongly recommend screen enclosures and not glass.

I'm with Joe. Bigger is better for them, and screen cages are excellent.

Piggy backing off of this:

Would a cham do well in my snake room w/ the ambient temp of around 80?

Brown... Panthers and Veileds like it hot and would do well in your room.  Jackson's need cooler temps

Adult male veild (and panthers) are suggested to be housed in a minium of 48" x 24" x 24" (so, 4 ft. tall, 2 ft wide and deep). These guys get bigger than you might think and require as much vertical space as possible.

The more size the better for these guys! I would also suggest that anyone interested in owning a chameleon join chameleonforums.com. There is a wealth of knowledge there, and a LOT of experienced cham owners.

I definitely ditto the chameleon forums suggestion. I spent a lot of time on there when i was heavily into them and learned a lot. I would also suggest raising the enclosure off the ground (like a stand or putting it on a table or something) to give the animal the impression of height. That way it'll feel like the cage is taller... if that makes any sense

To piggy back on what joe is saying above-- right now I have my chameleon's enclosure on one of those wire racks you can find at target for about $30-50 (depending upon size of course). Just set up the wire shelving to the height you need and put your cage on top. Works like a charm and helps for storage too!

I agree, bigger is better, but that size would work.

So if I were to section of part of my snake room with chicken wire, I could build a nice little enclosure for them. Sweet! Yinz just gave em a great idea for my "forever home"! ha!!

Thanks for all of the responses guys! I think I'll see how this one works, and if he grows out of it, so be it.

I should have mentioned earlier, it is a screen cage. This is the cage with my mom who's 4'11"
