Q: Dent and slight flaking on crestie egg

My very intelligent crested gecko has been playing non-stop in her peat moss, but for some reason decided to lay her eggs outside of her laybox and sadly I didn't check this morning like I normally do, so when I got home from work I found 2 eggs that both had a pretty good sized dent in them.

One looks like the edge is chipping and the other is just dented.  I've put them on moist superhatch and misted them.

Any other suggestions or do you guys think it might be too late?  I'm going to try to save them regardless, but I just thought I'd ask what you all thought.

Thanks in advance!

Huh, that sounds like what my girl did when she had duds. She played around in the laybox, but decided that nope, the eggs were going to be laid outside of it, and they were infertile anyways. Once, I even had a girl lay one fertile egg inside the laybox, and one infertile egg outside the lay box. I still don't know how she did it, but give the gecko credit, she knew which was which. Have you candled them for the "magic cheerio"?

If they're in your incubator, on moist superhatch, you've already done the best you can for them. Now it's the waiting game to see if they're fertile and are going to bounce back, or if they're duds and are going to mold anyways. Best of luck!!

I agree.  As long as they aren't broken, or completely flattened (One of my females thought she was a chicken and sat on her first clutch all night), they might be alright.  They only way to tell is just to wait.  Mine never want to use a nesting box, so I don't bother with it anymore.

Ok, one other thing I've heard mixed opinions on is misting, is it ok to mist directly onto the eggs?

As for candling, I tried with our big flashlight, I have a little one I use for candling, but I left it at my house, so I'm going to try again tonight.  The big flashlight didn't give me a great view, but I thought I saw something, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I never mist directly onto the eggs.  as long as the bedding is moist they'll be fine.  If you use a smallish container for your incubator, you can weigh.  That way you know about how much water youi need to add and when.  Just remeber, the eggs put on about 1-2 grams in the last couple weeks.

Copper only laid one recently. It was severely dented,.... i did what you did, and overnight it plumped back up. I had a leo lay one in her water dish yesterday.... and the other on the ground outside of her lay box. However, the one on the ground had already burst when we found it. The other was over hydrated, so we put it in the incubator without a lid for a few hours to help it harden. All three leo eggs look promising. The one crestie egg, however, may be a dud.

The eggs dents aren't out completely yet, but they look better than yesterday.  I'll just keep hoping they both make it.

Thank everyone!
