Emerald Tree Boa Baby Not Feeding...
|
|
Hey Guys,
Recently i bought a CB Female emerlad tree boa... I've had her since May 27/12, Temps are perfect @ 84, cool down at night, humidity is bang on as well... She's very active during the night but when i attempt to feed her F/T Like the breeder said, she will smell it and then turn her head away quickly? i've tired switching her out of the 18x24x24 natural exo terra tank she's in, into a 9LTR Bin and never had any success with her feeding in there either..
She was born in Dec 2011, Has fed about 6 times on different items such as live pinky rats and frozen mice, PK pinky rats, She's also had two sheds with the breeders..
Any suggestions? I'm kind of stumped with her, i'm at the point of " i've done everything right, what am i doing wrong"
Thanks guys

She could still be adjusting, I wouldn't feed her outside the enclosure (not sure if you are but your comment about the bin wasn't clear if you were trying to feed her in a bin or moved her into a bin as a new cage). You could always try live or p/k and see what happens. Have you tried having the mouse do the "zombie mouse dance?" Also maybe email the seller and ask if he did anything different.

Thanks Tiki, I was advised by the breeder to move her into a smaller bin, which i did so.. didn't have any luck there.
I'm going to give live a try, and i have tried the "zombie mouse dance" no luck with that either....

You can try scenting the mouse with chick down or some parakeet down or egg yolk or chicken broth .. or try a baby quail .. Good luck I know its frustrating when they dont eat ..

Could it be in shed?
Has it not eaten for you yet? Post a photo of your setup.

100% not in shed.. it has not eaten for me since i've had her, the breeder says she's picky as you need to rub it on her nose or neck to get her to take it, i've done this and haven't had her take it.
I tried her again last night with a little bit more of interest from her, but at the moment i thought she was going to take it, she turned her head away quickly?!

OPPS! Double post of the picture... Now i've changed things around in here, her water dish in in the middle more, and i look out the large stick off to the left hand side, she has a radiant heat panel and thermostat all hooked up, She gets mistings morning & night, on the hotter days she gets misted more often.
I don't touch her or play with her... she's my display only snake, but she's also my little gem, so i'd like to get her feeding soon

I may be reading your question wrong - but did you say she's eaten only 6 times since she's been born, and she's about 6 months old? That's once a month. Though the prey sounds a little bit big for such a little emmy (to me). Maybe try smaller prey sizes? And make sure it's plenty warm. When I had an emerald she only wanted food that was HOT, so I'd thaw in cold water, then run under super hot tap water for just a few seconds, then offer immediately. Or you could try braining the prey. But it sounds like she thinks the prey "smells" right, but perhaps her heat sensors aren't getting enough heat from the prey to recognize it as good food. You could either do the quick trip in hot water (not boiling), or use a hairdryer. In any case I wouldn't offer more than once a week. Maybe if you're offering too often it's stressing her out? I would feed her in her cage, at night, after "lights out". Let her wake up some, maybe wait for her to start moving around on her own, then offer it. My only other suggestions are to try to give her a cooler spot in the cage - the RHP seems to cover nearly the entire top, allowing no thermal gradient, and to let the cage dry out between mistings if you aren't. Also, I'd try to replace the skinny bamboo perches with something a little thicker - about as thick as her.
She's a doll. I hope you can figure out something to get her eating.

with ETB's, less is more when it comes to feeding, so I I wouldn't be TOO upset just yet. Sometimes, these snakes take a LONG time to adjust. They go about everything rather slowly... including digestion, growth, their whole life is in slo-mo when compared to most snakes of a similar size.

Thanks guys, i'm going to offer a smaller prey item in a week's time and see if she goes for it and i agree, she is taking her sweet time getting settled! I'll keep an eye on her and see what happens.
The top of the tank has a good amount open to allow air flow to go through there, i will add some ticker perches for her as well, i was told to not go any thicker then a pencil from another ETB breeder.
I was thinking about switching her into my hatchling rack, with 6qt tubs with perch and water dish? think that might help her feel more at home? this is what the breeder was keeping her in previous to me bringing her home to her natural tank setup

That's interesting to hear about the perch diameter. I've never heard/read that. I wonder why or for how long that would be applicable?
I don't think I'd move her. Every time you move her, she's going to have to restart getting settled all over again. I would just leave her in her cage if it were me. That might've been a good idea when you very first got her, for acclimation and monitoring purposes, but now that she's almost a month in her new cage I wouldn't switch it again.

You've had her less than a month and thrown a number of changes her way as far as the set up, I think she just needs to settle in.
I have the best success with new ones by duplicating the breeder's set up best I can until they are feeding regularly. I would do that, and possibly scent with bird the first few times.

Also, what is her hot spot / basking spot? I don't believe 84 is hot enough and could cause her not to eat, too.

i second the super hot food. Kel will ignore her food unless it's just been taken out of hot water.

Perches for most arboreals should be no thicker than the thickest part of the body. Too thin is as bad as too thick although I think you're better off erring on the thicker side. I would wait at least a week and offer a f/t small food item. Thaw in hot water and dry well. Just before feeding dunk the tip of the nose in boiling water (yes boiling). dry lightly and offer immediately on tongs. This of course should be done after dark when they naturally feed. I'd worry about a snake that only fed 6 times before sale and was "picky" as well. I don't send any chondro or amazon off until it's take at least 10 meals without working at it...I mean, you offer, they grab it. As for the basking spot, I don't think Emeralds like high temps but I haven't kept them...just remembering what someone who kept them had written at one point.

A lot of emeralds won't eat till after that poop they have a very slow metabolism and usually only poop after the 3rd time they eat and they say not to try and feed them there fourth meal until they poop the first 3.... But they are also know for going on poop strikes... Have you tried feeding live food sometimes they prefer that I no mine will only eat live won't take anything else but live. You could also try diff birds and other types of food they might like. Mine didn't eat for six months and everything was perfect in her cage sometime they will just not eat till they want to mine is eating again.
