ok so noodles my 9 months to a year old ball python ive had since late november has wheezed since i got him. ive had him for roughly 8 months, hes wheezed occationaly. i doubt its a URI since its often and over an 8month period, im not a vet but all signs say if he had it hed be dead by now.

he was covered in bad shed when i got him and has never really shed great till recently. better humidity in the spring\summer i guess. he halso had a small growth or swolen bit of scales on the corner of his mouth, its since gone but it looked like an old scar maybe.

just wondering why he'd still do it for as long as he has

Have you taken him to a vet yet?

In all honesty, you cannot rule out RI unless you have the animal tested by a vet.

My snakes tend to start wheezing when they go into shed because their nostrils get blocked by loose skin that moves when they breathe. The problem always clears up after shed but I imagine if they retained skin around their nostrils it may not. That could be what's going on with your snake, I would however still rule out everything else before concluding it's just retained shed. You don't want to take chances if it could be a URI.

he is in shed now. he hasnt done it in a while so maybe its when hes shedding.it was more often when he was younger, when he was shedding more often

i havent taken him to a vet yet, havent had the money since ive moved back home. i do plan on taking him and the rest of my herps as soon as i can, for check ups and the like.

hes never had bubbling or mucas since i noticed him doing it. or poping either. main reason i never took him to the vet, that and hes never refused a feed. hed eat every 5 days if i let him XD

possible his history of bad shed has led to some scarring of his sinuses?  also - some snakes I've known will express stress or pissiness at being handled by being huffy.

the question about respiratory irritants near the cage is a good one, too -

I'd take him to the vet to be sure - always the best choice - but it may not be anything.

ive had him on both aspen and paper towels, neither made a difference. its only when hes out i really notice. nope, never smoked around him. burned inscence at my old apt but at my house now hes not exposed to it if i burn it.

hes pretty friendly and hangs out or just cruises, so i doubt hes beuing pissy with me XD

My adult male did the same thing for several months, about 8 months, and almost over night it hit him bad!  Scared me.  Took him to the vet and ended up with 2 vet visits, a month of oral meds that did not get rid of it and a month of injections and breathing treatments.  See a vet!  Don't wait, it is much more costly and dangerous.  Better safe than sorry.
