Q: Marco--Question about Veiled Chameleon

Marco

Hi, my name is Kristen and I currently am the proud care giver for a Veiled Chameleon, and a Ball Python. My Ball Python's name is Salazar, and my Veiled is named Marco. I was hoping someone could answer some questions for me and/or give me advice.

So, Marco (veiled chameleon) joined our family June 22 of this year.  We estimated his birth date around the 3rd or 4th week in May.  When we adopted him he was with another small male, and they were both about the same size. Since then we have visited the pet store we adopted him from, and the other male that was with him when we adopted him is much larger than Marco.  Marco seems to have only grown a small amount in his time with us.  For being about 2 or 2 1/2 months old he seems to be the size of a veiled that's about 1 month or so. So, I was just wondering if maybe there is something that we are doing or if he just hasn't hit his growth spurt yet.

His enclosure seems to be in order (based off my research).  Humidity stays around 60-80, but may drop a little at night. Basking spot is 85-90. His cool down area is about 80, and night time temps fall around 75.  I have vines and flowers everywhere to give him plenty of places to climb, and hide.  We have a waterfall in his enclosure to help with humidity, but I vegetation in the water to be sure that if for some odd reason he slipped he would have no problems getting out. His diet includes mealworms constantly but I also give him calcium dusted crickets every morning for breakfast. Handling is once a week for about 5 to 10 mins just he knows there is nothing to fear when it comes to us.  But I watch to make sure his color is not pale or getting light, as if to tell me he is scared or uneasy.  I also never wear dark or bright colors while feeding and/or handling him. I noticed he seemed rather upset one morning while I was giving him his breakfast (I was wearing a black shirt), as soon as I changed into a white shirt he settled down and proceeded to enjoy his meal, lesson learned. I mist him down 3 times a day and he has a Tropical 25 UVB bulb which covers the length of his enclosure and we have him on a 12 hour light cycle. That about sums up Marcos day and enclosure.
So based off what I just described, is there anything we are doing that could potently stunt his growth??

PS, I have questions about my Ball Python but I'll stick with one subject at a time.

Ok lets see...

Well, i can tell you're a very devoted keeper and Marcos is lucky to be in such good hands.  I kept and bred veileds for several years and had great experiences with them.  One thing i noticed is that they do not need high humidity and actually seem to do worse with it.  They DO need to be properly hydrated, but this is best accomplished with the use of a drip system.   The waterfall is pointless (except for decoration) and you should not spray the chameleon.  I live in Colorado where the avg humidity is only between 15-25% and never had problems.  I'm assuming you're keeping him in a screen enclosure?  The lightweight and light colored aluminum ones work best as the rope mesh ones are very dark and veileds like it very bright and "sunny".   Good ventilation is more important than high humidity. As i said, they just need to be hydrated, not have high air humidity.   Also, there seems to be a consensus that reptisun 5.0 bulbs are the most ideal for this species.  Their lighting requirements are more specific than other reptile species.  A good basking bulb for heat coupled with a reptisun 5.0 tube works very well.   Also, meal worms aren't very good nutritionally.  Gutloaded crickets as the staple would be better. Also, dont over dust with vitamins/calcium.  Just a light dusting once a week is plenty.  Veileds will eat anything from pinkies to lizards to insects to fish to worms... you name it.  Variety is the spice of life for this species so mix it up.  Let me know if you have any more questions.  You should also snoop around the Chameleonforums... those guys and gals know their stuff

I second Joe's suggestions.  If you can get your hands on some roaches, my chams LOVED them... and silkworms.

this is what he is in currently.  Obviously not with that set up.  There is a fan on in the room his enclosure is in, and I take to doors off periodically, or open them to try and compensate for it not being screen.  I realize chameleons need good airflow, but in my defence he was only suppose to be in here until he was big enough for the 24x24x48 screen enclosure.  If it is an airflow issue than that can be easily fixed.  The only reason we went with this enclosure is that it was suggested to us because it was only temporary.  By no means did I plan on leaving him in this,  I would prefer him in a screen enclosure,  and I'm anxiously awaiting the day we can move him into something bigger and better.  I have some great ideas that I think will make im a very happy chameleon.

But here are my questions: Is any of this contributing to his slow growth rate?  I have read, and many people have told me that they are like people, they are all different.   And thats fine, I just want to know that I am not hurting him in anyway.
