WARNING; Paramyxovirus is infecting snakes/lizards all over PORTLAND, OR and VANCOUVER, WA, many people, including myself, have lost whole collections of pythons/boas/lizards due to this illness. It seems to have started from a guy named Jermane, in Portland, Or, selling/trading snakes/monitors to people, and his reptiles were the ones with the illness. these many people and myself have all gotten

snakes/lizards from him an brought them home and all of us have lost collections due to it. I found out by researching the illness, and talking with many people about their reptiles and where they obtained them, and how they died. so far about 15 people, including me, have lost collections. the illness seems to be spreading and is turning into a small epidemic. PLEASE be careful of where you get your reptiles and keep an eye on them and make sure whoever handles or goes near your snakes/lizards sanitizes their hands before and after each reptile. also if you are going to the willsonville reptile show this weekend PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!! thank you for reading.

Thank you so much for the warning. When you brought your new animal home did you put it through quarantine process?

So are you saying you have lost your entire collection?  I am sorry for your loss even if only one animal was affected.

Was a necro performed to determine that a strain of Paramyxovirus is to blame and was the strain identified?  Determining cause of death in a reptile without a necropsy is very difficult and could easily be attributed to one disease when it is actually another.  Most Paramyxoviruses are transmitted through direct contact with mucus secretions from the mouth or nose and proper quarantine and hygeine between animals would greatly lessen the loss of life from an infected animal.  It would not 100% guarantee that others in the collection did not get it, but a proper quarantine period with separate tools and sanitation before and after would usually limit loss to only the infected animal.

Have the animals that died been tested to confirm that is the cause, or did you come to that conclusion yourself?

What is the quarentine process for you & the 14 other people that have lost animals?

I don't know you or this Jermane, but I will say this is a pretty strong accusation, if you don't have proof that it is in fact Paramyxovirus (proven by a vet) or that it did in fact come from this person. I'm sure you wouldn't want someone else doing the same to you, without proof.

Also, those that lost animals/collections might want to rethink the quarentine process (or lack of, if that's the case) when bringing in a new animal. It can be a pain to do, but a proper quarentine can prevent/reduce these types of situation a great deal.

I am sorry for your loss. I hope that you did/are getting tests done to find out for sure what caused the deaths.

Someone local posted this from CL http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/pet/3211054235.html

It says they have yet to find anyone who has done a necro. It also says that whatever is killing all these collections might be something else entirely.

It's a good idea to follow the quarantine/cleaning/feeding/watering suggestions listed, regardless.

Have you got vet papers from a herp vet confirming how these animals died? Tests? Necropsies? When did all of this happen? I'm sorry for your loss, perhaps you should move your collection to the "deceased" page though, so people dont' get confused and think you still have them.
