Q: # of Venomous Snakes in Australia vs Africa

I don't want to know the # of species, but rather how many are estimated to be in the population for Australia vs Africa.  People always say Australia has the largest # of venomous snakes, but is that species or actual population #s?

Also if you could please provide a source for this, thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's by species and not population.

I'm curious what the actual population #s are though, my guess would be Africa has more population wise just cause of how huge that country is, but I want to see the population #s for each country.

Brittany, i love you girl, but this is the single most ridiculous and impossible to answer question ever posted in iherp answers.   I don't even know where to start...

First of all, what's venomous?  Are you asking about just elapids and vipers?  what about all the rear-fanged snakes that are mildly toxic or even very toxic but are too small to bite humans or just dont bite people often?  Do you anyone even has the slightest idea about population size for some of the snakes in the congo or the sahara desert?  What about the australian outback? We dont even have a clue about population sizes of many of the well-known species in this country.  Try to find out about how many cottonmouths there are in the US.  That's just one species and they live in the US where many people do population estimates on snakes.  Defining which snakes fall into the venomous category is hard enough... technically little ringnecked snakes are venomous and so are hognose snakes... even garter snakes are mildly venomous to some people.  I'd be impressed to see a list of all the species of venomous snakes in africa, let alone population estimates for all the species.  On top of that, new species are still being discovered.  They just found a new viper on the slopes of Mt Kilamanjaro and thats an extremely popular tourist attraction that many people visit each year.  I'd be surprised to see an accurate population estimate for even one species of venomous snake.  You're asking how many venomous snakes live in africa?  I mean... not to be rude but jeeze.  No one knows the answer to your question. No one. I dont think if you put every single herpetologist together from both africa and australia that they could even come close to estimating how many venomous snakes there are on each continent.

In the US certain species like the eastern diamondback and timber rattlesnakes have suffered major habitat loss and outright slaughter and they are studied extensively.  I mean... really studied a lot. Maybe there are population estimates for those species, but not that i know of.  And each year a whole new wave of babies is born and the population jumps to like 10 times the number in a matter of weeks.

Also, Africa is not a country.

I also love that george set out to find the answer for you!  How many venomous snakes are in africa and australia?   Not how many KINDS of venomous snakes... but how many total individuals are on each continent? HAHAHA

Man... that is seriously funny to me

Ok I'm going to type a full response when I get to my computer but I know it's a continent but they are resealing our parking lot at work and I think the fumes have given me enough of a high to not remember my middle name.  Lol.

Ok so now that I'm back at a computer, let me give you the background to this question (I agree it's a ridiculous question but hopefully this will make sense, the parking lot fumes are coming into the building now).

So at work we had this diversity day thing, they had little facts and trivia about several countries.  For Australia they asked me "which of these does Australia have the most of?  A. Kangaroos B. Venomous Snakes C. Aboriginies."  Well really Australia is the only country with Kangaroos and Aboriginies, so they have to have the most, but for venomous snakes, I assumed they meant population wise and I assumed since Africa is larger it had to have more, but according to them I was wrong.  So I was hoping someone knew the population estimates for these countries and personally I would include all venomous, so that includes rear-fanged since they have venom, however mild.

I don't think you were being rude at all Joe, I probably should have explained why I asked so it wouldn't have seemed so weird, lol

George, I'm not even sure how to respond other than giving you a totally awesome crown.

About those fumes though, check this out:

This spot was smaller than the rest, luckily I have a small car

I think it looks neat, but smells awful

Look how freaking far I had to walk smelling that crap!

You can barely see my car, so here's a close up so you can try to see where my car is in the above picture

Even my phone was getting high!

I feel like this will be one of those things I'll see later and ask myself, why did I post all that, but right now it seems like a good idea, so I'll go with it.

Those are for you to keep George, you'll get your points regardless (but my bra is prettier than yours, it has lace), as well Joe gets points, but no points for Nate as his Mom is a venomous snake from Mt. Kilamanjaro Wink
