Q: Using under tank heater on Exo terra ?

So here is the deal, I have a small rainforest exoterra I'm using for my Ptychozoon (flying gecko). It is 12x12x18 with the foam rock background. I approximated its size as closer to 10 gallons than it would be to 5 gallons- and therefore purchased a 10-20 gallon size zoo med under tank heater. After reading the instructions, I dont know whether to side mount or bottom mount it- bottom mount takes up most of the bottom not really allowing for a gradient (and I'm using paper towel substrate), but side mount may allow for my gecko to burn itself if it basks directly on it, but seems to allow for a gradient better, but the directions said water can cause stress cracks- so that may be problematic for misting the cage. Back mount is outta the question b/c of the foam rock insert. I intend to run the heater 24/7 and supplement a basking area atop the cage using a small 30 watt ceramic heat emitter. I have drift wood leading up toward the heat emitter. Can anyone help me out and let me know what experiences they have using these with exo terras or climbing geckos in general- particularly with side mount?

Right now im using 2 12x12x12 exoterras for the viper geckos and im using a UTH thats meant for 2 to 5 gal aquariums. I have them attached at the bottom. Luckily, since you have an arboreal gecko, you can get away with putting it on the bottom. Youll still get a temp gradient from top to bottom instead of one side to the other. It should work. Although it may get hotter than you want towards the bottom. They dont require a lot of heat to survive.

i believe exo terra makes a temperature control that you can hook up to heat mats and rocks, I used one on a heat rock i had in an old cage of mine it worked great
