Q:

Hognose isn't eating
|

In Relation To:
Wilbur

I bought a baby hognose male at the Myrtle Beach reptile expo August 11th, and have been attempting to feed him every 5 days since then. He has not eaten a single meal. I have been giving him a frozen thawed pinky, then putting his cage in a dark spot for the night. In the morning, there is still a pinky in the cage. The cage is a small shoebox-type enclosure.
Does anyone have tips on how to get him to eat? If I need to give him a live pink, I could potentially buy one, but I'd like him to eat frozen/thawed like his breeder promised he would.

My niece had this problem with hers, I put him in a second cage for feeding with nothing but a hide and the warm f/t mouse in the hide. If we wanted the hide he would have to take it from the mouse and that worked for that snake.

His tracking says that he's eaten.
In any case, my first suggestion would be to ask the breeder how the snake was kept, ie. enclosure, substrate, temps, etc etc. Then find out what prey was offered and how it was offered. If you can change your husbandry to match that of the breeder then maybe it will help.
A live pinky might work though. Sometimes they need to see the movement and feel the fight of the helpless pinky. Or maybe I'm just projecting.
And it could just be a hog being a hog. The randomly stop eating. It happens. Right now I have a male that hasn't in 3 weeks? Maybe a month? Iunno. I stopped keeping track. He's a punk.

I would put him in a small deli cup overnight with the F/T prey and try that a couple times... if it doesn't work, go get a live... may just need that to spark the appetite and after the one live meal, go back to offering the F/T again.

Have you tried dipping the f/t pinkie in some tuna juice (the water in the tuna can)? My hog used to be especially stubborn, and would only take live. Took me quite a while to switch him over to f/t, and when I did, he would only take a f/t mouse dipped in tuna juice. He finally graduated to a f/t mouse sans tuna juice about a month ago.

Thanks everyone! Sorry about the tracking thing- I am still getting used to iherp, and was batch feeding all my snakes at the same time. I didn't realize there was an option to put "refused food" for an individual snake.
