Q: How to contain a BCI who is determined to escape?

Odin
Well I'v lost count of how many times Odin's escaped through the night, and now my puny ass isn't capable of removing his death grip he had on his tank while half out this time so he is conveniently hiding behind a 200something pound tank, under a set of shelves, and I'm at loss for what to do, and how to keep this damn Dillinger escapee in his home. These lousy lid clamps, no matter how many I use, aren't  doing the job at all. So at the moment we are now having a psychological/physical hand-hand combat war full out. I'm pretty sure he's trying to see who will crack first. I'm certain he already has me pretty upset (to his advantage), and is very content with this last shot at using the shelves like a jungle gym, while I watch helplessly.
Even my coaxing about how much his Mommy loves him and "Why?" is he doing this to me, has had little if any effect. It's looking like a barter, or some kind of peace treaty isn't an option =p.
Any ideas as to what to use for a screen lidded tank instead of the lid clamps....anyone? I'm looking and not coming up with much at all. This tank is quite large, and suffices in size, and I got a great deal on it, and thought this could be efficient, or maybe at least contain him for him awhile to have a nice enclosure built by my husband, but Odin's smarter than he looks, apparently. There's a little bridge in the center for supporting water in it so it won't bow, well he's figured out this is the weakest spot for the clamps because he can wedge himself even just a few inches of his head and neck between the bridge and the lid and the clamps just go POP POP POP, and he's home free. The bridge is 3/4" glass, and what appears to be a part of the tanks' outer walls'. It would probably require a special saw, and I'm not sure about how altering the structure would be for the size and weight. I put books on this bridge on both sides to keep him off of it or try and dissuade him, but hes no dumby and just pushed them out of the way, haha. I've been up so many times through the night I've lost count. I don't know why last night he was hellbent on freedom, and it's not like he even usually uses 2/3 of his tank, but I struggled and struggled and didn't want to hurt him while removing his vice-grip he had. So, now I'm at loss, I have somewhere I MUST be in about 3.5 hours, and he's held up behind his tank, which the shelves are set up around too. I need to figure out something to do the job until I can get something built for him, but it may be a short while until my husband can return and do this, WHAT do I do for now?! I'll get something more heavy duty for sure, but for now I have a 7'er stuck behind his home, with time ticking away, and just hours until his next great plots for
escape take effect =\.
I've tried cabled hooks (the dealies with the bungee cord and the hooks on either end) in combination with the lid clamps to no avail. I could try using a feeder to get him out maybe, but it's doubtful since I've yet to have luck feeding him out of his enclosures, and he's a shy eater who won't eat with anyone watching or the light on usually.
What can I do to contain him at least temporarily, or for a short time preferably? A nice object to wedge between the shelves lower beam and his lids' top center where this bridge is?
AND how do I retrieve him from his hiding when he's essentially in a slot between the tank, wall, and shelves' beams???

He's half out but if I force him now, it's likely he'll slink back behind the tank.....now for the waiting game. He's taunting me! Touche, Odin, touche.

You must aquire an appropriately "escape proof" enclosure.  I'm a huge fan of Boaphile Plastics cages.  They have very sturdy latches that no snake will ever hope to overcome.  Not sure if you're anywhere near upstate NY, but I happen to have a couple 422D cages that are still in excellent condition but that I no longer need.  Could offer you a good deal on one two of them, if you're intersted.

Yeah you need a front opening cage with locking latches.

I understand I need a better enclosure, or at least a better lid-system, because he's not coming out of anywhere but the lid, which is strong, IF held down appropriately, ughhhh...but I don't know how fast this can happen, basically. Odin's in his home for now.....I'm sure I'm up for more sleepless nights until this is figured out. We're both worn out though, that's for sure. Warfare will do that. But, we'll call this one a draw.

I'm in Indiana too KCB. We're planning to build hopefully, or have an enclosure built, either/or. but I need a solution for this given moment essentially.

Got any duct tape? If something can't be fixed with duct tape, then it can't be fixed. Obviously a very temporary solution and you'll have the sticky stuff on the glass that will need to be cleaned later.

Try those bid landscaping border stones? That'll be about 30 lbs he'd have to move if you used 3 of them.

Hahaha, you're actually the 3rd or so person to suggest duct tape to me! But I think I have an idea I'll run by you guys for ideas and stuff. If I take some zip ties, put two on either side of the tank near the center where I'm having the issues, then I'll take those hooked bungee cord cables, a bit shorter than the height of the tank so there's no slack and that they're stretched a bit for tension, and hook them through the zip ties which will be secured around the frame of the lid, then the other end under the tank. Sound like an idea worth trying???

Can't hurt to try. However, really, a new tank is the solution.

How did you make out?  Did he escape again?  I havn't had to deal with my big carpet going AWOL yet, but I have a ton of clamps and weights on his tank just for good measure.  If the bungees have any give what so ever, he will be able to get out.  Your best bet will be weighting the tank lid down quite heavily for the time being.  Those large garden pavers sound like they might work...or, get the large, heavy-duty zip ties and attatch the tank lid to the cross-bar in the tank.  make sure they are tight enough that he can't get stuck in them.  They are cheap enough to buy a huge bag that you can replace them every time you need to open the cage.  It's by no means permanent, but it might do the trick until you can get him a more appropriate cage.

Sounds like its time for a new enclosure. I'm sure you could sell your current glass enclosure on craigslist to recover most of the money you'll spend on a new enclosure or supplies to build one. You probably would be better off in the long run, I found glass & screen usually eventually leads to problems either with nose rubbing during escape attempts or keeping proper temps/humidity. The cheapest enclosures I found were the boamaster cages, especially if you can make it to a show & save yourself a delivery charge. The melamine cages dont cost much more then if you built them yourself. I'm really happy with the quality & haven't experienced any issues with them so far but will say they are pretty heavy for one person to move. Even if it only helps with ideas when building your own I figured it was worth a mention.

PS - Odin is a handsome fella.

I agree with KCB. I have mine in a boaplastics cage (422D to be exact) and she hasn't escaped once since I had her.

He's containted with my contraption for now, and when my husband returns we will be building an enclosure, or buying if time or circumstances won't allow a build. I'm aware something more efficient is probably needed, but really the tank's been great thus far. I'm wondering if one of my females ovulating is causing his exhaustive efforts. But the temporary thing was the issue. Life isn't going as planned at this point, and as long as he has plenty of space, and isn't in any means of harms way, that this tank will have to do.It's actually a really nice and really big tank, 6' x 1.5' x 2'.  He can stretch out , and only uses maybe 1-2/3 of the whole thing, but it's not a cost thing, i just spent 200$ on shelves just for their tanks, and have spent so much money I've lost count to accommodate them happily, well as much as a snake can be happy I hope. I will spend whatever I need to keep him safe, happy, and efficiently contained. But time is the issue. My husband is fully capable of building, wiring, etc etc, so soon enough we hope. If not I have a lot of sources that can build for decent prices. But let's just hope for sooner than later. For now the bunge cords are sufficing, he made some attempts  the last night, but was met with chagrin, haha. For now he's contained, and I'm going to work on the whole situation. The cords have no slack, but aren't so stretched they'll snap either.

I used the same technique with my ball python and she still got out.

Well this will have to suffice until money/circumstances allow. He's not getting out, trust me. But like I've said, he will have a different enclosure when I can do so.

PS- I also have a thing that is the thickness of the top of the mid lid to the center upper support beam of the shelf above wedged in for an extra measure.

Duct tape. Never fails.

Something I have had to do for my little ball python that I lovingly call 'Houdini', is put on a screen lid overtop of her existing sliding screen lid, then put those useless metal clamps on and then for the grand finale, I bought 2-3ft. woodclamps that have a quickslide adjust on them and put those on either end. As it is a typical glass enclosure, I have to use just the right amount of pressure on the lid. Tight enough that she can't get it off but not so tight that I'll break the glass!! So far,so good...

I forgot to add something, whenever I have the unfortunate experience of trying to coax one of my bad kids out from some pretty impossible places (think inside and underneath a stove, up and under a countertop covering a dishwasher, um you get the picture!) I've had the best luck with just turning the lights off and sitting in the dark room with them waiting with a flashlight. I've usually not had to wait more than 45-60 minutes max before they get bored and just come out on their own. (even my gecko crawled out from under a dishwasher eventually!) Hope you don't have to do that too often, kind of sucks to say the least. Cheers!
