I was at the MD Havre De Grace expo this past weekend.
I had lost my 4 year old male iguana the previous day from unknown causes...(perfect health, green, correct lighting...we think it was some from of throat cancer. Started showing signs of gagging when drinking, no foreign body found...)
Anyways, I owed my dad a new pet. I kept walking past this female iguana. She was in a tiny ass cage. About 3 ft by 3 ft. The guy was offering her for 20 dollars or 60 with the cage.
I got curious and started questioning him. He said she was 4 or 5. Very tame. She eats pellet iguana chow. I noticed some marks on her. He said it was some form of fungal infection. He had been treating it with antibiotic ointment.
Obviously, this guy had no freaking idea what he was doing with this poor animal. I mean serious! A 3 foot cage for a 3 foot iguana? ARE YOU MAD?!
So being who I am I said screw it I'll take her. If she dies, at least she will have at least some peace in her final weeks of life.
I started treatment with antifungal atheletes foot ointment. The ointment seems to be irritating the rash. So I cancelled that option. I am not treating with antibiotic ointment mixed with Triamcinalone for eczema, calcium powder and aloe. All of which were suggested through random websites.
I am pretty certain this will cure the rash but it is obvious that this is not the only issue with her.
She seems like she is blind in some form. She cocks her head to food, gets like extremely close to it like she can not see it. Like she is making sure it is visibly edible. She also shakes her head. Not in the normal iguana head bob. Like she can not fully control her motor functions.
Her movements in general seem very slow and carefully thought out. The closest comparison I can think is like cerebral palsy. Where the muscles dont quite do what they should, but movement is still possible.
I am curious as to if anyone has seen anything like this before. Is there hope? Maybe a boost of nutrients and a balanced diet can recover some of her muscle strength and motor skills? Could lack of nutrients have caused these symptoms? Or is there a disease that I am not aware of that shows these symptoms?
(She has a few broken toes, a missing tail, a missing claw but no bends in the spine or anything like that typical with MDB)
