Q: Green Tree Pythons Not Feeding
Posted By:

Both of my Green Tree Pythons are not feeding, My adult male has been refusing for four weeks. He hasnt taken since 10/3. He shed halloween night and refused food today again. His temps and humidity are good. Is he doing the fall fasting or what? He is semi active at night and weighed 325 grams two weeks ago

My female yearling also is not feeding. I got her on the 19th of october and she ate on the 23rd. She has since refused on 30th, she struck and missed and maybe got a piece of the mouse, but otherwise refused that day. Thinking she just got spooked i tried the next day and she again refused, but shed a couple days later. Now today a week after she shed I offered food again and she refused. She is still mostly red so there is no way she is acting weird because of fall as well?

I agree with the previous comment, how long have you had each? What are they housed in? What do you feed them? You say the temps and humidity are "good", but what are they? It sounds like the little female you just acquired hasnt had time to settle in quite yet. Did the person you bought the yearling from come with records? I'd say let the yearling settle in a few days, not bothering her too much, then offer her another meal. As far as the adult male goes, he could be in breeding mode.

I have had the female for almost a month and the male for over a year. They are both in Exo terra terrariums warm spot about 86-88 the rest of the cage from 76-80s. Humidity goes from 90-60 with regular misting. They both eat mice, the female is eating fuzzies and the Male hoppers (moving up size for male next expo) Like i said shes eaten once for me and he was been a little bit of a picky eater since i have had him, but this is the longest off feed yet.

A ton of males go off feed this time of year. I am willing to bet your male just went off feed for the season. Keep offering him food but he probly won't eat for another month or two. It's nothing to worry about so long as he is healthy. As for the female... some younger GTPs can be finicky eaters. I had one that the only way I could get it to eat was to cut the nose of the mouse exposing the brain. This worked pretty good with him. You could try that. Do you feed frozen thawed? If so are you warming them up before offering them? Make sure the room is somewhat dark. And it helps to have places for them to hide and feel secure in thier cage. Like big plants or vines and stuff on the branches. And when probing younger GTPs it is easy to mistake a male for a female. Sometimes they tighten up all their muscles making it difficult for the probe to go in making a male seem like a female. Maybe your female is actually a male and is off feed too. Just some possibilities. I hope this helps

I have a couple males who are refusing. Typically, every year I beef them up at the end of the summer, so when they do fast, it's not as traumatic on their bodies.

For the girl, make sure she's breathing okay, I've never had a female go off feed unless she was gravid or producing follicles. Mike might be right, you may have two males. Great call Mike.

You're well within no big deal time, so don't freak out just yet. I've had a male go a year.

When mine go on an hunger strike I go from frozen to live and that gets them to eat.

The male is a no brainer. Offer it something once in awhile but not too often or you will just waste feeders. I will typically wait for the night time cruising to end. Mark the dates that it went off feed and eats next cause it will probably become an annual event around the same times each year. With the other animal, just give it time. I have had several younger animals not eat just prior to she'd, which happens often, but have had several refuse the first feeding after the shed too. If it is over a year old, weekly feedings may be a bit much depending on prey size. I suggest waiting 10-14 days between feedings but that's just me.

Also keep in mind the yearling is probably going to need time to acclimate, especially in an Exo. I would bet the animal lived in a tub it's whole life prior to coming to you. The fact that it ate a few days after you received it just means you received a strong feeder, but now the change in environment may be taking its toll. As Aaron said, it's way too early to be concerned. At this point I would not change anything (cage setup or prey item) as you will just be making acclimation more difficult. Leave it alone, don't handle it at all, and offer something about once a week until it eats. I know you like to handle your animals but I highly suggest not handling it until it is feeding routinely and appears acclimated. You would just be doing more harm than good. Going from tub to Exo is stressful enough.
