Weird patch of scales on Red Tail Boa
|
|
In Relation To:
Indica

|
|
So Indica has some odd scale near the end of her tail and they have me worried :/ Temp and Humidity in her cage are all normal, I use cypress bedding right now, she's eating, pooping, shedding fine, it's just this odd patch of scales that's concerning me.

I looks like she hasn't fully shed yet or has a peice left over from 12/9/2012. I'm willling to bet the next time she sheds or so it will be gone but in the meantime I would probably keep doing what you said you are above as far as humidty & temps & maybe give her a light soaking here or there & be sure to keep her enclosure extra clean. I think we get worried as pet owners & jump the gun but think thats a good thing. The fact that she is eating, pooping, & sheeding are all good things. I'd wait to se what the next shed or 2 does.
Just to be extra safe though you might want to post the exact temp and Humidity or a photo of her enclosure. It also might be a good idea to switch to paper for a bit or replace the cedar just a a caution. also I hate asking & sounding like a weirdo but I'll do it anyway the goof, has she been around any baby oil or anything like that? even pet store bought shed aid? If so I wouldn't use them on a regular basis. Keep me posted

I 3rd the soaking idea. It doesn't look like anything to worry about but keep an eye on her.

To me it looks like she was a little dry when she shed. When they are too dry, the top layer of the new shed can come off with the old shed leaving a weird patch. It goes away with the next shed (assuming its a good shed) and it usually only causes problems when people think its old shed and pick at it, damaging the scales.
(How many times can I say shed in a post :P)

Ditto from comment above. Ive had this happen time to time. Its like a rub/tad to dry when shed off. Itll be gone in a shed or two.

I agree with Aalomon, this happened with my MBK. It went back to normal after the next shed.

Thank you everyone :) The only issue I have is she HATES to soak unless she's the one that decides she wants too. I've tried soaking her in my tub and in a smaller container but she flips out each time, to the point where she ends up pooping she's so upset. I've gotten her to settle down fairly well half the time by letting her cling to my arm/hand while I soak her but even then sometimes she freaks out. I don't want to stress her out :/ is there any way I can soak her so she won't feel so stressed/freaked?

how about a nice misting shower with room temp water? I still dont think you need to worry yet though either way.

Soaking also washes away vital oils that they need to shed. Watch you humidity in the cage, if its right, you shouldn't need to soak her at all.
