What do you think about Chondros in tubs?
|
|
i keep my babies in tubs. the tubs are easy to work with and i feel like i wouldn't want to cage them any other way. when they get to about a year of age, i usually build them a melamine wood (coated with contact paper) cage with a glass front. this way i can see the animal better and i find it easier to feed the adults in an open front situation. not to mention the added insulation of wood.
here's my issue. i don't have the time to build cages. if i were to build a rack for large tubs, it would take a fraction of the time to build and i could save a few bucks, the tubs are lightweight and last longer and the reduced visibility of the animals leads to better feedings. i'm pretty good at building racks and perches and such, so i'm not asking how to do it...
what i'm asking is: do you think i should switch to using semi-clear sterilite tubs for all of my chondros of all ages? i'm particularly interested in your opinion if you have kept and bred chondros that lived their lives in tubs. thanks guys and gals! you rock! happy new year!
p.s. i'm only adding a picture because i think if you sit through this whole question, you should get to see a picture i haven't posted before.

The 66 qt rack I got is too small for adult chondros. I'll comment you some pics of my big girl in it so you can see how much she takes up. It works, but I don't think the animal is happy. I'm planning on doing custom cages soon.

Tubs are awesome for babies. I keep mine in shoeboxes, then larger tubs, then cages. Works great.

I forgot to add that I like large cages for the adults, but mostly because I enjoy looking at them. I have kept chondros quite happily in tubs with branches and silk plants for a little interest.

I had OUTSTANDING breeding luck with opaque tubs. The year I bred them in those, 4 out of 5 girlies threw. Much better than my normal "Zero for X" ratio in display cages.
I know it's a day late, dollar short, but I've had excellent luck with breeding adult chondros in tubs. Something maybe with the security, better humidity control, privacy, whatever. They were awesome.
