another sphagnam moss question

Ive been having humidity issues in my BP's tank. While i was at the local hardware store, i found a large bag of sphagnam moss for $3. Well, $3 beats $15 any day so i picked it up. I got it home and tore open the bag to find out that it was the pulverized "dirt looking" moss, not the "branchy" kind that you find in pet stores. Is it still OK to use if i put it in a small dish and not down straight on his aspen bedding? ive read that some brands contain coloring and chemicals and i dont want to hurt/kill my snake. He's my first one and i really like him. Any and all help would be much appreciated
Thanks

There may be other options to help with his shedding issues. From your picture, it looks like he's in a tank with a screen lid. Is it heated by an undertank heat pad or a light on top?

I notice the heat pad is on the side of the tank. It needs to be on the bottom. Since heat rises it's not doing him any good being on the side like that. Also, try covering 3/4 of the screen with a towel. This will help retain humidity.

George is on the money. The screend glass tanks just never held proper humidity or temps for me no matter what tricks I tried. I would use georges idea with moving UTH below & using a towel but would also say maybe slide that water bowl to the warm side or under a light & use that spray bottle every now & then. Even though it might cost more at first getting an enclosure that holds setting better will save you & pay off big time in the long run.

3/4+ of the top is covered. i also mist it a couple times a day to keep moisture in there. the UTH is on the side because its actually a 250w infrared bulb that i had left over from some chicks that i was raising. It has to be a few feet over the tank to stay at 90 or below. i just got him a 55gal long tank and am going to move the UTH to actually under it.

I'm a bit confused... what you have mounted on the side isn't a heat mat?
Are you heating with an overhead bulb? If that's the case, that is likely why you are having issues with humidity. Bulbs (and CHE) are very "drying".

As far as the spagnum peat moss, no, I wouldn't use it - just for the mess alone. Home depot and other hardware store do carry the "branchy" kind, too, and yes, for much less than the pet stores.

ive seen setups where the moss would be wetted and put in a tupperware container, or similar, and holes put in the lid. that allows for no mess but still keeps humidity

Yes, you are correct - that is a way to do it. I have personally only used the"branchy" kind in that as well, and the animal often drags the moss out with them, though, too, so it may get messy still.
It sounds like you prefer to keep him in the manner you are and you want to try the Peat Moss, so go ahead, give it a try and let us know how it works.

No no no! Go return it, not worth it.
I have used straight up peat moss with snakes & I still use it with one, plus other critters like my geckos & tarantulas. The stuff is great as it does hold humidty & the acidic content is high enough to prevent molding. The major downfall is that the stuff is VERY VERY VERY dusty. Just try to carefully pour a cup of it into a tank, you will end up with it on all the walls no matter how careful you are. Think about what this does for their lungs. I know what it does to my nose until the next day. I've also had to pull pieces out of faces that got lodged under scales around their mouth.
The branchy kind is much better since your snake can actually go *through* it, the peat will do nothing but lay there. I do still use peat in with all my geckos, but they still get the branchy kind in tubs.
The only snake I still use it for is arboreal & rarely touches the ground. It allows me to spray him down without molding his bedding.

ever thought about switching to cypress mulch? It holds humidity better, and you can get a big bag at Lowe's for 8 bucks i believe.

I don't have experience with moss, but I do know first hand that as long as you have a screen top, your going to have issues. I tried everything with my BP because I was determined an aquarium was better for looks. Didn't want tubs because it's harder to see them. I tried covering up 3/4 of the tank with towels or wet sheets. I had the water bowl on the heat pad (UTH) and I also sprayed it down daily. I could not get the humidity to stay above 50%, usually around 40 or less. I even tried cypress mulch. The only thing that worked for me is switching her to a tub. Best idea ever. She now has a maintained humidity of 50-70% and has had perfect sheds ever since.

I've used moss for years with all kinds of snakes. It does hold a lot of moisture so for that it works great. I used it in rhino and gaboon viper cages with great sucess. And i still use it in all my aboreal viper cages. But as already stated once it dries out its super dusty. Probably not ideal for the snakes lung. Although I never have had a problem that I could atribute to that in the past 20 years. I would have to agree with the above thoughts here though. The main reason your having issues is the tank your using. Aquariums are for fish. Move the snake into a tub or a well made PVC, or even wood enclosure with no screen top and less ventilation and your humidity issues will be solved.
