Q: Crested gecko egg help!!!!

Hi, we are new here and could use some help. Our crested geckos have been laying eggs like crazy( we love this). The first batch started to hatch on Friday at 98 days, the baby did make a hole and we waited 3 hours and nothing else happen except the egg looked like it deflated and only a little bit of fluid came out in the beginning. We know for a fact that the baby was moving at the beginning of the process just not at the end. Should we have helped him out sooner?? Both babies from this batch died. This geckos eggs seem really hard is this normal? Are next egg from our other crestie is at 90 days today and looks good so far. And then we have 2 more eggs from the first mom that are at 74 days. We are just overly worried now. Any advice? Sorry this is so long.

I have not had to help any eggs, but if they look too hard, and the babies are pipping, you could help them after a while.  I truely have never done this, not have I witnessed an actual hatch, just the after-effects.  I'm hoping someone else chimes in.  Eggs have been known to go over 100 days depending on the temps they were incubated at.  The longer the incubation, generally the larger, healthier, and better structured the hatchling... I would not suggest cutting them, but I would likely help them if they don't hatch after an hour or 2... maybe just keep an eye on them and see when they slow down for an extended period after they try to hatch? if they can't get out, you can try to open the egg further.

Sorry about the little guy that did not seem to make it... have you tried opening those up further?  Good luck with the rest of them!!

We did open the eggs after 3 hours in hope to help them out, just to find that they had passed. One thing we did notice with both eggs is that there was little to no fluid in the eggs. All the videos we watch it looks like there is tons of fluid in the eggs. Thanks for your answer and I hope to get more from other crestie owners.

I opened a few eggs after a certain amount of time and found live and dead. If you see the babies open the eggs, even a little, you can take a small blade and slit the egg further just to make sure they can get out ok. If the female has been laying for a while, the eggs may have been laid without enough calcium therefore making the babies unable to get out by themselves. Just a thought

I agree with tiki... I had the same thing happen last season.... an absolutely beautiful, fully developed baby got the egg slit but never made it out. We cut the egg open to help as soon as we saw the hole and the baby had already died. Try bumping up the humidity in the incubator. We've done that this year and so far we haven't had any deaths and are at a 100% live hatch rate.

Thanks everyone.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we will have some healthy babibes soon!!! Theses are the first eggs for both our females.
