Q:

The difference between red mites and black mites?
|
|
So I had a customer come in the other day to show me her bearded dragon that someone gave her earlier that same day. Someone had purchased it for her as a gift from the guy who cleans their business' fish tank (the moron who own the other exotic store that has been closed down since Feb). Immediately I noticed these strange red dots, and asked her about them. She said that it was sold to her boss as a 'special red scaled' type of bearded dragon. I took it upon myself (with her permission of course) to spray some Mite-Off on it and wipe it with a damp paper towel. The results were astonishing.... all of these 'special red scales' were in fact bright red mites! I continued to treat the animal the best I could and lent her my can of PAM to treat the enclosure at home.
My question is, what is the difference between the red mites and the black mites? I've only dealt with my own mite issues in which each time, they were black mites. Any information is helpful.... even though the problem is being treated, I'd personally like to know any differences for future reference.

Same size as the black ones or smaller? Juvenile snake mites are reddish.

Same size.... but elongated in shape... not round like the black ones we typically see.

In doing some searching, the red ones seem more associated with lizards - especially imports. I would think the treatment of the enclosure and furnishings would be the same as for snake mites. Not knowing what is safe for lizards, I can't recommend what to put on the lizard itself, but a soak in a diluted betadine solution while the cage is being taken care of would certainly help the beardie feel better - treat the bites, help them heal. And she could repeat every couple days. The water will also drown the mites on the animal.

And make sure she is keeping an eye out for dehydration and provides it with real good nutrition - if it has had them for awhile, those can become big concerns.

Yes G.... she didn't know. She was lied to by a their.
The stuff I sprayed on it advised that it was safe for all reptiles and seemed to kill them on contact. Even after just spraying him down once and running him under some cool water seemed to make him feel a not more lively. She has instructions on proper husbandry and nutrition.... had she not brought it in, the level of the infestation would've killed him in another week of going untreated. I've never had a lizard with mites... only snakes... and they look totally different from one another.

I like how the asshole sold it to her a color form. How much you want to bet they knew before she got it?

Their entire shop is infested with mites. The feeders, all the reptiles, and even the walls have mites on them. And they're planning to reopen.... I don't know how they can. Truthfully the only inspections we get are through the USDA and they only monitor mammals. However, they CAN launch concerns with fish & game. But it seems they keep slipping through the cracks somehow. Their store is worse than any bad craigslist ad time 100. Its sad.

Yes g, that's exactly what they looked like. All bright red and elongated. I guess my primary concern is where they actually come from...as in what carries them, etc.

If I took a guess it would be the same factors as snake mites. Poor husbandry, improper quarantine, shitty seller, imports in the collection etc............Important thing is you did what needed to be done and your shop is providing the best info to your customers and the public in general.
Don't threaten me again. Asshat.
