Tarantuala's!
|
|
Well i wouldnt say im an expert T keeper. I only have one t, and she is a n. chromatus. She can be defensive so I do not handle her at all, nor do i really belive in handling t's in general.
Well anyway Ive been looking at two different T's that i really like.
Avivularia Versicolor
Poecilotheria Regalis
Now i know that pokeys are an advanced species so I dont want to jump into it. I want to know what you guys and galls think. I own have 13 snakes, 5, lizards, a t, and a tortoise. Do you think I can handle a pokey or just stick with the a. versi for now?
Is there a stepping stone t that i should get prior to a pokey that would prepare me better?
Thank you!!!

I would go with the A. Versicolor for now. We have two and they are absolutley beautiful.
Pokeys are quiet lovely, but they are very fast and very clever. Pokey's are really for experienced keeps.
We got some P. pederseni spiderlings in and one found his way out, not to mention transfering was kind of hard because they were so fast.

Research, research, research.
If you feel like you would be confident chasing a small speedy little thing, go for it. Honestly pokie slings can be easier to raise then Avics. Do unpacking & rehousing in the bathtub & cover the drain if it's not one you can lower. I like putting a rolled up wash cloth or handtowel in the bottom of the tub as they will usually stop there to hide rather then shooting up the wall. Housing them with room for it to grow through a few molts also helps.
Their bites are nasty, but there's almost no point of going to the hospital as there isn't much a doctor can do for them. If you look up RobC on youtube, he has one, & can't remember if there is a second, he did after getting bit by a large P. ornata. Here is also a great site with listings of bite reports, there's even one of versi bites.
Really I think you should go for both P. regalis sling run around $10, cheap add on with a versi

So, have you decided on which one you are going with?
We have around 200 T's in our collection, quite a few slings so if you have any questions please feel free to shoot me a message and ask.

If you are looking for breeders , I recommend checkinng out JamiesTarantula, Ken the Bug guy, and Anastasia at net_bug.net. I've purchase T's from all three and had a great experience with all of them. All my T's arrived healthy and well pack. Our pair of A. Versi actually came from Ken, and I also purchased a P. Irminia sling from him a year ago and she's huge and beautiful now.
