Hi all I have a question about thermostats for UTH? I heard from a few web sites that you don't need them for precorded UTH that they are mainly for heat tape. I just wanted to make shore because I bought new UTH from my pet store (they actually had them) and don't want my pets to get burned if I do need a thermostats.

Use a thermostat! If a pad malfunctions, you may not know until it's to late. In my beginnings I had a pad malfunction & I had no idea until I was cleaning the tank. The stuff covering the wires had melted. Imagine if the snake had burrowed down to it Yell

I agree with Niki I have 2 identical UTH's and they vary a lot between the two. There is a 15 degree diffence it the two which were purchased at the same time from the same store. One runs on high at 85 the other one runs in the high 90's to over 100 (No snakes in cage just testing on full to get an idea of what they ran at) I currently use an old Ranco . Personally I want to get a Vivarium Electronics one they are a lot better and not so noisy.

You want to use a thermostat. Its not only safer for your animal but also you, heating elements can cause fires and do all the time. Using a t-stat will help lower the risk of this and also save you on power. Smile

My one and only fatality that was my fault, was when I was brand new and did not know I needed a thermostat or other way to control the UTH. It overheated and killed one of my snakes. You ALWAYS need something to control it with, even if its a dimmer (rheostat). Thermostats are way better though, and much less irritating to use :P
