How to keep mammals and snakes seperate in the same room?
|
|
I have a problem. I need to keep my reptiles and mammals in the same room. (my dad hates animals in the house) The problem is, I don't want my snakes to smell the little rats and hedgehogs and ferret, etc. and try to escape and eat them but I also don't want my mammals to be scared of my herps either. The worst is that I have rats and mice. I'm feeding my herps well, but I want to prevent ALL of my animals from potential harm. I feed frozen thawed not live, just so they don't have as much of an instinct lust for live. Any tips on seperating them and masking their scent?

yeah, I don't think it's possible to mask the scent.
I do research. I work on mice. I put disposable gown, shoecovers, gloves, and a paper cap over my own clothes. if I spend more than an hour at a time down in the mouse suite, when I come home I can tell when the snakes are hungry because I get close and they're instantly alert. this is despite the fact that the mouse suite is uber-clean, the cages are clean and the ventilation is excellent.
rodents are just that stinky.

Just take the precautions to make the cages escape proof. Otherwise there should be no issues with keeping them all in the same room.

Other than an elevated feeding response.

I have my hedgehog in the same room, and I havent had any problems so far. The snakes dont even seem to notice the hedgehog (at least as a food source), and the hedgehog doesnt seem to notice the reptiles (as a threat).
However, when I thaw rats in the room, all the snakes go nuts, so I'd imagine that you will want to be more careful if you have rats in the same room as, like mentioned, they are likely to have a higher feeding response.

I think that with a constant smell it will actually be a bit numbing, but shouldn't be an issue. Just make sure your cages and as escape proof as possible.

I forgot to mention, although hedgehogs will also eat small snakes in the wild, I haven't noticed abberant behavior from him living in the reptile room in that way either :P Definitely make sure your cages are escape proof...
