Q: Security of VE175 Tubs

In light of the terrible tragedy involving the deaths of the two small Canadian boys, I felt is was necessary to reassess the security of my snakes. I have three potentially dangerous constrictors due to their size (or future size). My biggest Boa constrictor, I feel, is safely secured in a Boaphile cage. So no worries there. But I have another Boa and a year old Retic, I keep each in their own Iris VE175 tub. I was so happy when I found those tubs. They allowed me to house my other Boa for $30 versus $300 that I paid for the Boaphile. Also, this size tub allowed me to cost-effectively cage my Retic as he grows up. I already have plans to upgrade the Retics cage to a large custom enclosures within the next few months. But I had plan on caging the other Boa in the VE175 for her entire life with me. Has anyone had any issues with the tubs? Are they still consider secure housing? She has never escaped from it. I don’t see her pushing. But I would hate for something to happen and a “perfect storm” of worst case scenarios develop and she gets out and something horrible happens.

Personally, I wouldn't trust such for an adult Boa. When you pick up from the sides (try it from several locations), does it gap even a little? In addition to escape, there is the possibility of one attempting to escape, and getting it's head / body caught in it and causing injury or death for the animal.

Thanks Jeff. At this time, my Retic isn't a threat. I will have his final cage before he is. Sonja, what's not shown in the photo are the binder clips I use to prevent gaps. Well just that fact I am questioning it tells me I can do better. So I will.

These tubs are at lot stronger than they appear. I just call them Christmas tree tubs though lol. They do safely housed mid size large constrictor. Adult male burms or adult boas are perfectly fine in them. I housed my adult half dwarf in one for quite some time without issues. (He is 8ft and 16lbs) I also housed one of my retics in it short term (couple days) who is pushy without issue. Needed to fix her enclosure. It has a large lip and I have not nor seen any animal bow it out, I know a number of breeder who use them religiously, with or without racks. I have not heard of any issues. Mine is just back up and quarantine now.

SLRPiX how do you or how have you seen these tubs "locked/secured"?

I agree Che'. If you're having questions something can probably be fixed. If not, you did the right thing by reassessing.

Che', do you live in an apartment, own your own home?

Sonja, currently I am renting an apartment. Within six months to a year, I will be in a house.

I asked because I thought I recalled that you lived in an apartment from a previous question. In such a setting, I think there is an even greater need for very secure enclosures. If an animal were to escape, it may not stay within your apartment. I would also be concerned whether or not a tote would be seen as a secure enclosure by the managers of the apartment, or if you could convince them, even it they are, for instance.

I agree Sonja that reptile keepers in multi-dwelling units (apartments, dorms, etc) have a greater need for security and, in my case, a greater need to be inconspicouos. I work hard not to let me neighors and apartment management know I have snakes. When I received your question, I was in the process of price comparing different cage manafacturers.

I left it as is. The large lip makes it very unlikely anything is going to escape it. I wouldn't put anything over 9-10ft in it, but then it would be too small anyway. If you are concerned, I would put it in a rack that pulls from the short side either with or without the top. Will eliminate any concern with escaping.

Who besides Animal Plastics make racks for these tubs?

I believe Boamaster does.

A rack for these could make a decent base for a 4 foot cage.

How are you heating them curently w Flexwatt?

In general, I'm gonna have to keep these particular totes in mind as my critters grow. I have a few that I've tried to put in a cage, and they simply seem too stressed as compared to in a rack drawer, and the CB110s I have aren't gonna be large enough eventually.

I am heating the two I am using with some old Zoo Med UTHs that I had around not being used.

For tubs with such lids, I've drilled holes and used small snap hooks to secure the top to the bottom. A rack is still the ideal solution.

Joe wait until Dec 26 and Walmart will have tons of them for $29.95. They are commonly known as Holiday or Christmas tree storage tubs. You can order them online at reptiletubs.com and other sites but they are like $50 plus another $50 for shipping. Some people have luck and can wait until Walmart puts them on clearance for like $15. I am not so lucky. These tubs go fast around here.
