Carpet Python or Brazilian Rainbow Boa?

So I've decided that I kind of want another snake. I've never had anything bigger than a corn snake, and I just really want some kind of python or boa - a big snake that I can chill with and that would still be handleable despite size. I've looked into a lot of kinds of snakes trying to see which one would be the best fit, and the two species I like the most so far are the Brazilian rainbow boas and the carpet pythons. The only thing is, I don't know what the temperaments of either species tend to be like. Would these be snakes that would make a good pet snake, or are they more for show and breeding? If they do make good pet snakes, which would you say is better in general? Or are there any other species that I'm over-looking? Thanks! =)

they both have similar temperments...... babies can be pretty nippy, but they can become very tame..... I think brazilians beat carpets hands down...... carpets don't have that nice sheen

My suggestion is Boa! I know brazilians can be fairly difficult to care for especially as a starter, but I don't think you'd have an issue with that, but my own personal opinion is some sort of boa in general, red tails are my favorite...but then again that's just my personal preference.

Both will strike a lot as babies, but BRB grow out of it pretty quickly while JCP can hang onto the habit for quite a long time. Expect to get bitten a lot by a baby JCP. It doesnt really hurt, but they've definitely earned the Angry Little Worm title in my house. BRB housing requirements can be a little specific, but not hard. If you take the time to set the environment up correctly to begin with, you'll be fine. I think the JCP housing requirements are a little more forgiving. If price matters, you can get a really nice BRB for about half of what a really nice JCP will cost you. If adult size may be an issue, get a boy, they definitely stay smaller.

I would take a carpet python over any snake. They are easy to handle and are great display animals. most boas and pythons will hide all day and you never see them but if you give a carpet python something to climb on then they will be out in the open a lot more. They are very curious and like to explore everything. Some can get big but they dont have the huge body mass that other big snakes have and are easier to handle.
Then you get to the colors and patterns. Jungles Super bright yellow and jet black, cant beat that. And the irian Jayas with the chestnut color with browns and blacks. Then you get to the jaguars, best looking snake ever.

You should just power feed a blizzard corn snake. If you use your imagination, it will take on any pattern you want.

Hello Nilloke, I would suggest BRB's just because I have 2 and absolutely love them. My bigger female is my most favourite snake out of my whole collection. She is as docile as they come, never struck or bit me at all. My baby male bites me a lot but he is getting better now that he has grown a bit. I have moved him up from fuzzy mice to hopper mice and it seems to make all the difference in the world. He has only bit me once in the last two months and it really does not hurt. If you dont see the strike you really dont feel it at all.
The color and iridescence of the the BRB's are awesome, I know with these point and shoot digital cameras we have today, they dont really do the snakes justice with the color, but in person I believe you too will fall in love. Good luck with your decision

Get both!! =) That's my recommendation!
The carpets aren't as sensitive as the rainbows are to husbandry issues. Rainbows need higher humidty and such.
Both are nippy as babies. But both are wonderful.

i would say carpet also, their temperament is about the same, i mean to each snake their own you can't really label one snake as having a temperment. but with the snakes ive delt with carpet show alot more personality, but again to each snake their own. both are pretty, tho i prefer a high yellow jungle to a BRB, but hypo BRB are awesome looking also so yea tough choice

Carpet, hands down, as the easier to care for snake of the two. Otherwise from what I've seen, as adults they all have pretty good temperaments. Keep in mind that if you go for a carpet, you have different size and color choices, too. You can go for Irian Jaya carpets (5-6ft), Jungle carpets (5-7ft), coastal carpets (8-10ft) or Centralian pythons (8-10ft). It all just depends on what you're looking for in the end.
Carpets are much more forgiving in the husbandry area, too.

I've got 4 carpet pythons and the breed was my first snake. 2 of them were real nippy but calmed down quick after handling.. the other two have only bitten me once each. They've got some awesome and unique patterns (especially with the 25-75% diamonds), and the jaguar morph rocks. I just had a friend over to meet and handle all of my snakes; we're going to start doing reptile presentations to boy scouts and schools. All of them were fine with him handling them, completely chill and mildly curious. I have one that loved to hang out on the top of my laptop while I worked but now she's a bit too big...
I do know nothing about BRBs, but I love the carpets. :)

If you are looking for nice Brazilians let me know....... I just ordered a real nice on from Eugene Bassette for my girlfriend..... they are 165 shipped........ and they aren't all washed out looking like most of the junk out there

i'd go with a carpet. i like brb's but i like carpets more. they are nippy as babys but most of mine growed out of it within the first month and some growed out within me handling them 2 or 3 times after there first shed. if price matters id pick up a coastal or jcp but if not then id pick up a diamond junle jag or coastal jag.

Yeah but if you're looking for a snake to "just hang with" then go for a boa. I'll let you borrow my Carpet for a while, he's fun to handle but very active, gotta be moving all the time, wants to explore and adventure and climb on everything.

Everyone has already said it all, but I'll put my two cents in.
I vote for Carpet. They can be snappy little buggers as babies, but they tame down fast and they usually have great temperment as adults. They are often very active snakes when they are healthy. Mine definitely don't sit around with my like the Ball Pythons do. The Carpets are always on the move. Handling time for the big ones can actually be tiring. They are great to have though.
Ball Pythons are great too for just "hangin out".
Boas are tempting too, but I'd go for a nice pretty ret tail. They can also be really nice snakes to just "hang out" with.

yes but thats the point, if you're in it for them being pets and so forth, a carpet is best because it is very active if its healthy and thats what you want isnt it? i mean i myself dont care to have one that just lays or sits around all of the time, that gets boring and dull. i want one thats going to be fun to mess with and keep me active and moving alot also.

Yeah, I'd looked into the ball pythons and red tail boas, and really...as cool as they are, I do want something that's a little more active. I guess I basically want a bigger version of my corn snake. heh I can keep my corn snake out for long periods at a time, and he rarely sits still. He's always climbing up my sleeves and poking around, but I can still do other things while he's out (i.e. watch television, go on the computer, even do homework). I'm almost considering taking Mongrel Kitty's suggestion and getting both! lol But I am going up to the Wheaton All Animal Expo next weekend, so maybe I'll see both species in person and get a feel for which one I like best (although I'm starting to lean toward the carpets because those jaguars are gorgeous!) Thanks to everyone for your answers! I'll let you know what I decide (and there will, of course, be pictures posted of whatever I end up getting). =)

GET THE JAG lmao. i dont have one yet but i love the jags, will bird is an exceptional and reputable breeder and i am going to pick up one or 2 from him this year. he has some very nice diamond jungle and diamons coastal jags. i have bought all of my snakes from him except 1 and it came from anthony caponetto. if you decide on a carpet make sure you get one from someone that is reputable and very well known for there breeds. i could list a few breeders i hold highly reputable but since i deal more with will bird he would be my first choice. he also has one of the niced 75% diamond jungle carpet lines also which are the python pete line. so i would say if you pick something up order you one from will bird or anthony caponetto or andrew hare.

If you are going with a carpet python, and you are going to the Wheaton "All Animal Expo" then definitely go to Scott and Jennifer with Boa-Cabana. They have F2 quality Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons, if you want to see an example see Neo in my collection. Wonderful folks to work with, they will answer all your questions, and their CPs are top-notch.
