Q: Taming advice.

In Relation To:

Tibbers

My Savannah monitor Tibbers is growing, and I am trying to tame her/him by hand-feeding her/him but I don't think it's enough I give her/him a bath every week.(No soap or anything of course, just luke warm water) When I feed her sometimes (s)he bites me, I know it's because (s)he thinks I'm food, but if I drop the super worm or I have to fill up her/his water dish she goes for my hand, again I understand (s)he probably just thinks that it's food, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, or better ways to tame. I don't want to force handle or stress him/her out but I also don't want an agressive lizard. If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I'd be really grateful.

Thanks.

How big is Tibbers? By your picture, it looks like (s)he is still a baby, maybe 12 inches long? My juvie Savannah Monitor, Mati, used to be incredibly skittish to the point of being aggressive; he never actually bit me(though he used to try to do so quite often), but I've been tail whipped plenty of times. Now, though, he's a sweetheart. I tamed him through frequent, gentle handling; baby Savs can be held with both hands supporting its entire body, and pin the base of its tail between two fingers to prevent whipping; you can very GENTLY pin its neck between your fingers as well to prevent biting. Bigger Savs can be held with your arm supporting most of it's body, it's tail between your arm and torso to prevent whipping, and your hand gently around its neck to prevent biting. Again, the key is to be very gentle, yet persistent. You have to show your Sav that you're more stubborn than (s)he is.

When they're very young/little, they can be super scared of everything, including the gigantic human looming above it. Try to wear thick gloves during feeding time so that Tibbers associates the GLOVE with food, and not your bare hand; my boy Mati used to try biting me during feeding time, too, but by wearing gloves, that switched his thinking drastically. Monitors are incredibly smart creatures. Another tip is that you can put one of your frequently worn t-shirts in the cage with Tibbers so that he/she gets used to your scent. Sounds weird, I know, but monitors are very scent-based creatures. If Tibbers knows your scent, (s)he will be more used to you being around. Again, you have to be more stubborn than your Sav, and continue being gentle. Most Savs tame down as they grow bigger and less afraid of you, although there are exceptions.

Ok. Thanks a lot. All of what you said makes sense, and yes Tibbers is still small, I would guess she would be 8-9 inches. And again thanks for all the handling advice, I'm still kind of a newbie at this, but I'm getting there. Thanks.

You're welcome; I  was a newbie too, when I first got my boy. Let me know how it works out; I'd love to know how Tibbers progresses. :)

I will! I put one of my "most frequently worn" shirts in there. (s)he hasn't stopped staring at it. So we'll see how everthing goes.

Haha, my boy was suspicious of the shirt, too, but soon he started sleeping inside of it. Makes a nice burrow. Laughing

Really? That's so cute!!! SmileTibber's is too young for me to discern gender, but I think (probably wishful thinking) that (s)he's a girl.  But I'm sure tibber's will get used to it eventually.

Yeah, my Mati is just assumed to be a boy because of how large the bulges behind his vent are; I haven't actually done anything to determine gender. He's only fifteen inches long right now.
