Q:

Rat Tracking software?
|
|
I feel like this is a stupid question, but I am trying to track my rats (feeders AND pets) the same way that iHerp allows me to track my snakes. Does anyone here use iHerp for that, or does it not really work in that capacity?
I have two different "lines" of rats that I am going to be breeding... feeders and pets [Blue, Dumbo, self, & Rex (eventually) and combos of all]... and I want a way to track their pedigree without having to do pen & paper style tracking (or huge Excel docs). Ideally, the sofware I use would be free... but I understand that this may not be possible. If you DO use iHerp for feeder-breeder/pet tracking, I'd love to get tips on the best way to track them in iHerp, since I didn't see any predefined tabs for it when I was looking.
TL:DR I'm looking for an 'iHerp' for tracking rats... any suggestions? (free > paid)

*note: Please do not add anything but herps or inverts. Birds and Mammals and other non-related items will be removed from the system

That being said, are you just wanting to keep up with lineage or something?

I use iHerp to track my frozen and live feeder inventory. I have those items set as private. Send me a PM and I will explain.

Yes, Cenobite... I am looking for something to track lineage. I understand that iHerp is not designed for that (nor is it the appropriat place)... so I'm wondering if anyone here has suggestions for a better (more appropriate) solution. I have Blue, Dumbo, and Blue Dumbo... and I'd like to add Rex into my lines, so that once I have production up-and-running, I can sell pets as well as feeders.

http://colonymanagement.jax.org/ - it's a mouse based program...but you could use it for rats too. otherwise you can just use a spread sheet. I use a composition book for my mice. LOL! Going old school. The most important thing I can add is to list what EVERY baby is...not just a straight family tree. Because doing a straight family tree will not show all the recessives that are there...and while you can still get surprises, by knowing what every baby was, you can learn a lot about what recessives they may have. Breeding rodents is much more complicated than breeding snakes *genetics wise*
