"Dragon Safe" Live Plants for Vivarium
|
|
Hello, me again. So, I just ended up with a new rescue case: Chinese Water Dragon. She's in good health and everything, but I've never kept one of these before. Now, normally I keep nearly all of my reptiles in breeder-style racks, for both ease of care and conserving space, but this time I decided to build a naturalistic viv for my new girl. Here's the real question:
What kind of live plants are safe for use with a Chinese Water Dragon?
I know that Spider Plants are safe, and have a couple of them already, but I want to know if there are others. Particularly, are succulents, such as Jade or Aloe, considered safe for use, or would they be toxic? What about Hens and Chicks? Are they okay? I'm trying to go for plants that are low-budget and low-maintenance, because I'm definitely not a gardener.
Again, I've never done a "living" vivarium before, and I am by no means a green thumb, so I'm really, really not that knowledgable about plants.

Pothos are a favorite of mine, because they are so hardy. Others that I use are Snake Plant/Mother-in-law's-tongue, and Bromelids.

Check out this site, it as a list of over 50 safe plants from A-Z. Some of my favorites are the zebra plant and parlor palm. Just make sure to look for the plants by SIENTIFIC NAME and common name because sometimes there are multiple plants with the same common name for example, the zebra planty comes up with a succulent and a leafed plant. The leafed is the correct one.

Thank you very much; I've heard a bit about pothos, but I don't know anything about it; looks very pretty though, so I'll definitely check into it! I actually have some Mother-in-law's tongue laying around the house, so I'll see about planting some of that in there, too; so far, I have Hens and Chicks and some spider plants in her cage; she already dug up one spider plant, but she likes them a lot. Spunky little gal. On a random side note, I've heard that the dark brown coloration that she currently has can come from stress and health problems; she's still a bit skittish, so I think the coloration is just due to stress, because, aside from still being a bit bare, her viviarium is ideal. Do you think that when I put in more plants and branches for her to hide in and around, she'll relax and phase to to a normal green? I rescued her from a pet store that had no clue what they were doing, and she wasn't being kept in the most stellar of conditions. As I noted above, this is the first CWD that I've ever ended up with, so I'm not exactly an expert yet.

Oh, and one other thing: I've heard that there are a few kinds of aloe that are okay; do you know if Aloe Vera in particular is safe?
^^^ ReptileKid125, there was no link in your post, so I can only assume that you forgot to include it.

I can name a bunch of plants that are "safe" but it also depends where you get your plants from and how you process them before adding them to your tanks. most of these plants are grown in places where they are sprayed with all types of chemicals and must be cleaned. not to mention the possibilities of aphids and other possibe bugs that may be pests.

Any plants in my house are never sprayed with anything but plain old water, and I always shower them off thoroughly before sticking them anywhere near my herps, anyway. Thank you all; this has been a tremendous help.
