Q: Ball Python Breathing Strangely pt2

So yesterday Sonja answered my question (and I can't find it) and said I should soak my ball python and try to get any stuck scales off his nostrils with a tweezer. I tried that tonight and I couldn't really get anything off :/  I got one or two specks, (hopefully I didn't push them further in x.x) but he's still breathing with his mouth and making popping sounds.

Today his eyes were cloudy and his skin is waxy to the touch. Maybe he's closer to shedding than I thought? If he's showing these signs how close should he be roughly? Because maybe I should see if it comes off when he sheds next?

I really don't know. Any expert (or at least more educated than this newbie) opinions?

Oh and also the area close to the anus is enlarged? swollen? bigger?  I'd say maybe he has to poo, but he did already since the last time he ate and he hasn't accepted food since. (Last Sunday June 9 14)

Ok, wheezing/popping/gasping/yawning are all some what common or normal when the snake isi n shed or has shed and retained nostrils. BUT combined with a swollen ventral area seems to me it's time to consult a vet. RI can be a secondary symptom of many other types of infections. IMO it's always better to be safe than sorry.

What are the temps in his cage and also include if you're using a temp gun or not. Describe his set up, too.

Hotspot is 87-90F, other side is 80-82F. It's been humid here lately so humidity has been 60-70%. He's in a 20gal long glass screen top. ZooMed Aspen bedding, a water dish, hiding 'cave', under cage heat mat, and a log with fake leaves Link. No temp gun.

Do you have anything regulating / controlling the temp of the heat mat?

Can you get a pic of his vent and post it?

No on the heatmat, I didn't know you could/don't know how. He just goes on it when he wants or goes ontop of the rock when he just wants the light. I can do my best for a picture.  I couldn't get a good enough one of his nostrils. :/

It's hard to see with the lighting, but it does appear swollen from what I can tell. Does it look irritated, too? I guess just based on what you've said, I'd switch him to paper for a substrate for the time being to remove possible irritation accuring from the aspen aand so you can keep a better eye on it for signs of infection. Soaking every couple days may help that as well as promoting a good shed or helping eliminate a hard urate for example. Snakes often defecate with or shortly after a shed.

How is it that you are measuring those temps you gave currently? Is there a thermometer with a probe attached to it that is secured in place on top of the heat mat so you can get an accurate temp of the actual temp the snake is laying on? Without a thermostat / rheostat/ dimmer switch hooked up to the heat mats, they are known to get far hotter than what is safe for snakes and often results in the belly of the animal getting burned. They are simple to use - basically you plug the heat pad into the thermostat and then the thermostat into the outlet. With the means of a switch or dial, you can adjust the temp to that which your snake needs. Typically when there is the fear of a possible respiratory infection, the first recommendation is to bump the heat up a few degrees - to the low 90s. If you only have the little dial thermometers and no thermostat or temp gun, that is something that you'll have a hard time doing with accuracy. I don't think there is any husbandry tool I use more than my temp gun. You can get reptile ones or from your hardware store or on Amazon for example. Another suggestion I would make it to cover about 2/3 of the top of the screen top to keep humidity in for him.

And to note... being I am not visually seeing nor hearing your animal, I say follow your gut and if you think what's happening should be seen by a vet or if it worsens, please take him in - even if it's for nothing more than peace of mind. : )

If he could be ready to poo than that's what I think it looks like because his tail looked like that last time a day or so before he pooped. Thought he was constipated and soaked him in warm water and he went that night. Maybe that's what it is again. I was just confused since he hasn't eaten. It doesn't seem irritated, just a little poofy. I'll change all of his bedding just in case though.

The thing is I tend to get over worried, and he seems to be happy and chilling and doing his own thing besides the breathing through his mouth thing. He's alert and moves ike he's healthy when I hold him and curls up just fine. He hasn't worsened at all in the past week, only change has been his eyes getting milky and then the little puffiness on his tail.

I have the dial ones, yes. I'll definately look into the temp gun. I had a digital thermometer with a probe but I uh kinda sorta accidently left the receiver part halfway under the spotlamp for 5 minutes and it melted the plastic and then it was always 16degreesF heh..heheh... ......

It rained yesterday so the humidity is back down to about 60%, do you think that is fine?

Reptiles mask a lot of issues, I don't think you're over worrying.  At this point I would have taken him to the vet.  If he's open mouth breathing and his vent appears swollen, you should take him in.  Better safe than sorry.  If it worsens, you might not be able to help him in time.  It's best to take them in as early as possible so you have a better chance of treating whatever problem it has.  It's also essential that you get a thermostat as soon as possible.  Those dial thermometers are useless and I guarantee are not measuring the temperatures correctly.  If the dial is saying 95, the actual mat is probably MUCH hotter.

This is a reasonably priced thermostat. Get on this asap!
