Q: Dehydration possibly? Or am I just paranoid?

Nihilus (running lead for name)

Alright, so my man and I have just recently rescued a Savannah Monitor. About 11" or so in length, we've taken a liking to calling him Nihilus. I saw it fit with how voracious he is when feeding.

His set up right now is a tank ( Chris will be building him a nice enclosure, carpenter and all!), the tank is at 65-70 humidity, substrate is eco-earth. His basking is at about 127 degrees and his over all temp is at 87-90 (depends on the temp in our room I have noticed). The temp at night has averaged out to 78 (averaged. As we had just gotten him Tuesday the 7th).

Now, I might be paranoid but I am thinking he came to us with the startings of a respiratory issue and slightly dehydrated. When I slightly press his throat I heard a bit of mucus. He has no bubbles though and is quite active! His eyes are vibrant and not cloudy or sunken; Yet I have not seen him drink.

Like I said though, he is quite active. He eats like a champ. Burrows and moves stuff out of his way, but after that he just rests. It could be that he tuckers himself out and all. I am resorting to hand watering to be sure and keeping the temps up a bit more to aid in his respiratory health (just in case), right now he is resting and his head is not elevated.

Apologies for this long winded post and me seeming a bit paranoid. I have a boa and a python. I have also fostered many a reptile, amphibian, and mammal for a long time. Yet, one can never be too cautious.

To leave on a more upbeat note. He is quite the clumsy little guy! Thank you in advance!

If+ you haven't already seen this website, check it out. There's also links on the right hand side to the FB group & forum.

My understanding is that if everything is correct, you will rarely see a sav drink. Between the setup's humidity & food, that's how they stay hydrated.

I have read through that site time and again! Always good though to brush up...

Anyhow, he now seems to have gotten stuff in his eyes and now won't open them... I have gently wiped at his eyes and have given him a bath as well as made an appointment with the vets for the 31st!

Anything I can do for the meantime?  He is (so far) alert and a voracious eater! This is why rescuing can become a headache... I just hope it is worth it all in the end!
