Q: Respiratory Infection - Morelia viridis

Hello,

I've had some problems with Morelia viridis. We visited vet today and we diagnosed RI as I thought before. Antibiotic treatment was done and i have provided higher temperature. I would like to ask what else could i do to help treating respiratory infection. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Make sure that drafts in the air aren't hitting the cage, and then maintain enough humidity through misting, since dry air is the enemy for this species. Then you have to fight environmental bacteria. Always use clean water for misting (I use distilled) and make sure your mister is clean as well. You need to make sure you keep the enclosure as sterile as possible, cleaning all cage surfaces as well as the perches and any plants. I use F10 disinfectant in my home as well as professionally, though you could also use chlorhexidine, which is easier for some people to find. You can use bleach solutions, but I recommend investing in the specific disinfectants I mentioned and I experience a very low percentage of illness in my animals.

It's also beneficial to reduce stress by covering the outside walls of the cage for privacy while an animal is convalescing. You could use black paper, butcher paper or newspaper. Not pretty to look at but any little thing helps.

Lastly, make sure you're punctual in administering the antibiotics your vet gave you. If the animal seems like he/she isn't getting better, don't hesitate to call your vet; it can often be necessary to employ a different antibiotic or give an animal another examination and culture if the infection has changed.

Thank you for answering. I still have them in quarantene box which was desinfected with Ecocid (recommended by the vet) before i put the animals back in. They have a perch, which was also desinfected, bottom is covered with paper and they allways have fresh water. I have read about F10 disinfectant, but i didnt find it here in Europe, so i use Ecocid.

They are covered, so it wont be so stressful. We have also send saliva for antibiogram. Since the dose is small (to not overdose), they will get antibiotic daily, with vitamins.

I'm glad you have Ecocid! Getting the vitamin as well helps so appetite loss doesn't last too long.

Just in case you ever need anything, this website is great for ordering in Europe when you can't find certain things. :)
