Q: Possible scale infection - Mollucan python

Jose'
Our Mollucan python-Jose’ has developed a patch of scales that are discolored, seems slightly softer than it should and is almost exposing the interstitial space between the scales. It started about 2 weeks ago and we’ve been putting chlorhexidine on the affected area and I am just now realizing that it is getting worse as well as spreading.   He is a very good eater, just shed this morning and has no bowel issues whatsoever. We got him from Exotic Pets in LV and they told us that he is a CCB.  He has always had a patch of stuck shed here and there though we remove it promptly and have had no health issues with him until now. Has anyone seen this? What recommendations are there for treatment etc? Thanks! Lisa

D/c chlorohexadene... it can irritate if used too much,,,,, use the standard burn treatment.... soak in mild betadine and water solution (color of iced tea) for 10 minutes every day, and change substrate to paper towels...it should come out with the next shed or 2..... if it doesnt get better after a shed, then it may be fungal..... at that time treatment can be changed to an antifungal ointment

I'd clean the area with chlorohex or sterile saline and coat with neosporin or similar antibiotic cream. If he's not housed on paper already, change to it. You should know within a week if its infection or fungal...if there's no progress in 7 days, switch to generic athlete's foot cream and see if that works.

I agree Jeff, Kai you are the man, and I also agree with gfx.  I had a brazillian that was housed on coconut husk, it holds good humidity and she got a scale infection( Not a burn), but I switched to paper towel, cleaned with sterile saline and put on neosporin, within a day it started clearing up, and all was gone in one shed.  You will get control of it I know, hope everything goes well!!

Thanks for all of the advice. Eric and I were leaning towards a fungal infection but it really is odd since he's 99% arboreal and is typically coiled up on cork bark. I will still change out to paper towels in case he is getting into it at night, wash the cork bark and then start him on betadine soaks and if needed OTC cream (antifungal or antibiotic) Great to know that there is a place to find answers when you need it. =-)
