i have a green iguana and I am looking to get a ball python, but one of my friends who "supposedly" knows alot about reptiles said that you can't keep the 2 in the same room due to diseases. I wanna know how that makes sense b/c the pet shops basically have tha cages on top of eachother. Someone please let me know cuz i really want a python

I'm new to reptiles, but I do know that you should keep them serperated for atleast a few months (ie 60-90 days) for Quarentine purposes. If you get a ball and he is infected with parasites and what not they could spread to your Iguana....I just recently got a Ball Python and want 1000 more so be careful, they are addictive. I'm getting another here in about 2 weeks. lol But for everyone else reading this If I gave Nikbauer misleading information please know I'm new and just let me know, so I wont make the same mistake....lol

Your friend is wrong. If you cant keep different species in one room then Id need 10 different room for my animals. All you need to do is keep your new animal away from your current animals to prevent diseases from spreading and to monitor them. After about 60 days, I add them to the racks or my reptile room. Ball pythons are great starter snake pets. Goodluck.

I agree with ImBooBy. Once you've quarantined any new animals, it should be fine to keep them both in the same room as long as their husbandry requirements INSIDE their individual cages are met.
Your friend's mentality is like saying you shouldn't keep a dog and a cat in the same house for fear of disease.

Im a new ball python owner as well, like i said before, but the only "true" way to tell the sex is to have him probed....which the guy should have done it for you....if he dont know how then find a herp vet....also, i want to recommend getting a book called, "The Complete Ball Python," by Kevin McCurley...which can be purchased on amazon.com. I just got it in the mail yesturday and holy crap....its very informational....everything for beginners like you and I. Check it out. I can help out with the small stuff but look to the (big bucks) these guys in here, for the tougher stuff....Lets see how long it takes before you want another one...lol

If you couldn't keep reptiles in the same room I'd be in trouble LOL. What everyone is saying about quarantine is correct. 60 days is a standard safe time. My quarantine times will sometimes vary depending on where I get an animal. If you don't know the animal or who you're buying from it's always safe to seperate as long as you can. Buying from a pet shop the animal's health is always questionable. I find the comment he'll help you out with choosing mice a bit odd so it makes me question how much experience the shop owner has. I know you live in a small town but sometimes it's worth it buying from a reputable breeder even if you have to ship an animal in. All that being said even though you quarantine an animal you sort of have to know what to look for to decide if it's safe too. You've come to the right place to ask any questions though. Congrats on your new pet!!

In Jeffs case, AND ONLY JEFFS CASE, you certainly do need a separate room for each animal during quarentine. Since i know Jeff doesnt have that kind of space, he can send some of his animals to me to quarentine for him.
Your friend is pretty uninformed about herps, it would seem. Yes they should be quarentined, but it can be done in the same room. I dont know what kind of diseases or parasites would transfer from an iguana to a snake though. As long as you meet the standards for both animals then it shouldnt matter if they are in the same room.
As far as sexing a snake, you should find an experienced vet. Call ahead to make sure the vet handles herps and has a probe set. It could end up being a wasted trip otherwise.
If i were you, i would not try to feed it this tuesday, if you just got it. Moving a snake is stressful enough. If you dont give him time to settle in to his new home, he will probably not eat for you when you offer food. If you offer food too soon after arrival, he may stress even more and go off feed. Just let him alone for a week so that he has time to get used to his surroundings.

Yes I am SPECIAL aren't I Nate!! Unless you have a certain amount of experience there's no doubt an animal should be kept in a totally separate room as long as possible. It is difficult sometimes for me to find a totally isolated area but I do have certain places when I can't find out a complete history of an animal like ones that are WC. Personally knowing the major players here in the industry it's not difficult to find that information out or I know someone who knows a person I've gotten an animal from. It does pay off too sometimes when you do a bit of investigating. Although I've kept tabs on this female Green Anaconda I just aquired I did some more digging as soon as I got her and found out she is pos het for Albino!! She was from an albino project and two of her litter mates came out that way. Bonus for me!! I really have no reason to breed my large animals but this might just be worth trying to prove this out .
Congrats on your new pet Nichole and I hope everything goes well with it..
