Very agitated newly acquired 1yr old Jungle Carpet Python; help.
|
|
I recently acquired a 1 yr old (aproximately) female Jungle Carpet Python. I've had her now for 2 weeks and she is very skiddish about me handling her. I'm curious about what steps I should be taking to get her used to me. I'm aware of some of the 'approach' techniques I should be using with her, but not much else. Help...

That is pretty typical behavior for the species at this age. I would just recommend hook training (touch the animal with a hook or something similar before picking up so it becomes conditioned to that singling handling.) You may want to start holding wearing a leather glove. Try not to approach from above. Short holding sessions are probably best at first. The goal is of course to develop trust. At this point, instinct is telling him he needs to be defensive to survive.

Oh, and I always wait until the animal is calmed some before returning to the cage so that they don't associate an undesired behavior with getting to be put down.

I agree with Sonja. That is typical for Jungles at that age.
