Q: Freezing kill parasites?
Posted By:

 hi!

random odd question here.

I'll be getting a Mock Viper in 3 weeks, naturally they eat frogs and lizards. So my plan is to go out and catch smaller frogs and freeze them, for scenting and if I have to, feeding purposes. If I put them in the deep freezer, will this kill of some parasites?  The Mock Viper is a WC by the way.

I dont even know why I am asking this since the lizards it eats are alive with parasites a swell...beign they are WC...  best to know though :)

thanks!

Why dont you just catch one frog, freeze it, and then rub it all over a mouse? I mean, most likely this snake is going to be off feed for a while if its wild caught, and by the time it acclimates (if it ever does), it would probably accept a heavily scented rodent.

that is true. It's a LTC from wha tI have heard since it is in Canada already. I was just going to keep a few extra frogs incase it wouldnt take a scented pink.  I just dont know how bad the parastie load in in a frog.

ya, that is what I want to do, I'm going to use it's aggression to take pinks for me. going to try scenting first and if it gets desperate over time I will give it a frog, maybe mouse scented. as I dont know if these snakes hunt by sight like my vine snake does.

I know there are sites out there that sell feeder frogs and lizards.  They arent very cheap but mostly CB.  Freezing kill alot of parasites but not viruses.  I suggest getting a pack of frozen feeder frogs and see how that works out for you.  Probably the safest way.

actually, freezing doesn't kill protozoa like Giardia - just an FYI

Freezing kills most parasites a lot of bacteria and virtually no viruses. BUT you absolutely have to freeze for at LEAST 30 days or its pointless. Another idea is to catch a bunch of frogs and keep them for 30 days in captivity and treat them for what ever you can as far as things like giardia and THEN freeze them.  Use these frogs for feeding and scenting until you can get it switched over...and good luck with that. Nothing more frustrating than a picky eater.

thanks! I will do that, I am getting it in 3 weeks, then 1 week to get used to everything.. so 30 days is perfect!  I am going to use his aggression and the tendancy to bite and hold to get him to feed on pinks.  Hope it works! Thanks for the info again
