Leopard Gecko Eye Issues
|
|
2 of my Bell Albinos seem to be having eye issues. Both of them will not open their left eye. The eyes aren't swollen or pusy or anything. Both are acting just fine and eating well. None of my other Leos are having issues.
Is there a chance that they have gone blind in that eye?
I am not in the situation to pay for a vet bill, any suggestions? Can I use Visin or anykind of eye drops on them?

I don't know about the drops, but the last eye issue I had really had me worried too. First off, I would suggest shining a low power flashlight in their eyes, to see if they dilate. Second, what does the area around the eyes look like? My eye problem was that the eye on my leo's right side was really ragged (the eyelid I mean), and she wouldn't stop licking it, and it looked like she was squinting. After she shed, her eye went back to normal.
Are they being kept in the same tank? If so, I think you should separate them. One may have transferred some sort of pathogen or germ to the other.
What type of substrate are you using? They might have gotten something (like a piece of sand) stuck in their eye. Of course, I would think they would just blink or lick them clean...
Also, if you can't get them to open their eyes to a flashlight, just try taking a little bit of water (dechlorinated, of course), and with an eye dropper, place a tiny bit in the eye. Sometimes, it can help just to let leos soak or have a bit of water on them to help with issues. And, the water may flush out whatever may be in the eye.
Like I said, I'm not sure about eye drops, and I really hope someone else here can help you. Good luck!
Jim

Is there any retained skin from a past shed on the lids? I tend to agree with Jim, try a soak or place them in a plastic shoe box ( with air holes of course) with some damp sphagnum moss. Hopefully this will help. As far as not being in a position to pay for a Vet bill, the hard truth is if you don't have the means to provide proper care for an animal, you should not own the pet. Good luck!

Wow, hard truth huh, you have never had a tight month?
I would not recommend putting any type of chemical on your leos, they have thin sensitive skin. If the moss box doesn't help definetly seperate them since they could be injuring each other ( if they are already seperate then kudos!) I don't know if you can get silver sulfadene ointment with out a prescription where you are but that is the only thing I'd recommend for the eye beyond maybe a dab of good ol' neosporin.

I definitely agree to separate them if they are not separated already. I had a female get nipped on the eye a bit once with an eager male. I left her alone and she recovered very quickly.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I checked them this morning and the smaller of the two was acting just fine, had both eyes open and looked great. The other one is still the same.
The two geckos have never been in the same tank before or in direct contact with each other. All of my Leos have hides with damp sphagnum moss in it. I checked both of them for stuck sheds the other day and they both looked ok. Using neosporin & silver sulfadene never crossed my mind. I may give that a try on the other one to see if she gets better.
Thanks again everyone. I will keep ya'll posted.
