Crested Gecko Weight/Cage Size
|
|
Hey people, I have decided to get a 50-55gal tank for my Gecko girls, and I'm wondering what would a good weight be to move them into it. Right now they are 6.9-7.9-8.8grams, 4 1/2"-4 1/2"-4 1/4". I also plan on getting 1or2 more girls for the same 50-55gal tank but later on. they are in an exo-terra now, the measurements I can't remember but its about the size of my inverted 20gal in height. I have heard too big of tank can stress or make sick a Crested thats to small. Any input is appreciated. A couple added questions, when should i put a lay box in with them? How big/old/or weight are they when they start laying eggs?

I put a laybox in at 20 grams.
Some females may never start laying infertal eggs some will start right at 30-35 grams.
My juvies get moved to there own 10 gallon at 10 grams and get moved to a 20 at 16 grams. I wouldn't put any of them in a 55 gallon unless they were all atleast 30 grams. Like you said too much space can cause them not to eat. Are you planning on dividing the 55 gallon? Or are you planning on houseing them all together? I would do dividers just in case because not one of them is near a sexable size so I wouldn't plan on them being female. I cage all mine as if they were going to be males and then group females together after 20 grams. Some times raising them the way you can be trouble. Say one of them becomes a male and you have to seperate them from the other two. That one can become depressd and stop eatting. Eventualy he will come around. I'm not guarenteeing this i'm just saying it can happen.
Would you be interested in trying to take some poor shots of your geckos to see if we can see any pores? All you need to do is put them in a deli cup or a kritter keeper and take a pic of the poor area between there legs like this. http://pangeareptile.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28741&highlight=pores
Use the macro or super macro setting on your camera.

Moss molds really quick it's no good as a bedding. Get eco earth. You need to change it once a month or every other month but it holds moister. It will mold over the poo when they poo so get a scooper. I have a hermit crab scooper. or do you mean for a laybox? I use eco earth but some don't like it because it can dye the eggs. You can get spagnum moss from your local nursery or even beaked spagnum moss. Theres a million diffrent things you can use but spagnum moss and eco earth being my fav laybox mediums.

Pores can develop out of no where. I had a "female" develop poors then drop a package on me within a few days. She was 22 grams and I was soo pissed.

I was saying to put them in a cup because it's easyer to see the pores than if someone is holding them.

I use Coco-Soft for substrate, and plain old peat moss for nest boxes. So far, so good! The peat moss holds the moisture without molding, and the CocoSoft compacts when you press it down, and makes like a reptile carpet. I have used reptile carpet too. If you put live plants in, be sure to put stones on top of the dirt so the geckos don't lay eggs in the pot instead of the nest box.
Personally i've decided that a couple medium sized tanks are easier to maintain than one humongous tank. You've got a lot more flexibility, so if someone gets sick you can isolate it easier, and if two don't get along you can give them their own "rooms".

Yeah i've found that keeping geckos in a bunch of smaller tanks every where is WAY easyer than a few huge ones. I have my two males in a divided 55 gallon live tank. It used to be coco fiber but taking that huge tank apart to clean it every month was a pain and hard on my back. I am going to try making a frount opening door 55 gallon tank and see if thats any easyer to work with. Glass is a pain.

Yeah, front opening is SO much easier. I love my ExoTerra tanks... Now I wish someone would make a little critter keeper style tank for juvies that opens in the front!

Geiko has some dimpling which will probly turn into pores. I would need a closer pic than that to be sure.
Tigger is WAY to blurry
You didn't get a pore shot of kitty so I can't really give you and answer.

I've used moss forever for my tokays and have never had a problem with molding. As long as you're not SOAKING it you should be fine.
