Q: Aggresive bci rtb?

In Relation To:

Shakayloh
I have a passion for snakes.  Most people on here do.  My first snake was a ball python.  Hes my sweetheart, and my baby.  My second snake was my first red tail boa.  and this one is the one im having problems with.

Since ive put them in the rubbermaid totes, kayloh's gotten more agressive.  im saying kayloh because (thats its name, shakayloh) i dont know if its a boy or a girl.

to answer the questions that i know are coming up..

yes, theres enough room
no, its not housed with another snake
yes, its being well fed
yes, theres enough water, heat and humidity
yes theres a cool side

theres absolutly nothing wrong with the enclosure

now the things that i know, so you dont have to tell me

its a bci, and they are naturally agressive
it is the end of  breeding season, and it could be a male, im not sure, and that causes agression

now given that information, what is going on?

why is it getting so much more agressive.  when i approach the enclosure, if it sees me, it hisses, and continues hissing until i leave or take it out.  im going to post this in questions too to get as much feedback as possible.

Unless you mistyped, I'm going to have to argue something you said... BCIs are generally tame snakes--that's part of why they're so popular. Babies, of course, can be aggressive (defensively, of course) and the less a boa is handled, the less tame it is, but the average boa is quite docile.

That said... Maybe it's because of the tub? You may have all the husbandry conditions right, but tubs are short and far from "see through". The inability to see out and remain used to your activities may make it nervous when you "confront" it. Maybe I'm just anthropomorphizing too much, but that's all I can think of--unless it doesn't have a place(s) to hide.

My boa hated the rack, I ended up having to move him to a plexiglass front custom built enclosure (I prefer to use as few glass tanks as possible) My sweet docile loving boy turned into the hissy monster from hell after I put him in a rubber maid. Maybe theres a smell to the plastic they don't like, maybe sliding in and out freaks them out.or maybe they think its their great hidy den and you just ripped the top off! If he/she wasn't aggresive before you moved it, either give it more time to adjust or move it back.

LOL Mine did the exact opposite, they went from tub enclosures to "boaphiles" and became pissy little bastards for a few days to a few weeks...but they are relaxed and fine now...

You need to provide more details about the environment and the mannerisms of the snake.  Temperatures, feeding, etc etc.  You need a lot more details before any help will be useful.

Yep, what SIZE is the tub?  Believe it or not they like small, cramped spaces.  All my yearlings are 2' long at least and they are happiest in cramped 10-gallon tanks.  And MOST snakes don't handle change well; when you change their environment, their "whole world" changes and they get out of sorts.  Normally the only reason BCI are "hissy" is if they are afraid.  They are NOT "naturally aggressive".  I have heard that about retics and afrocks but never BCI.

If you take him OUT of the tank to handle him, does he calm down?  If he's hissy, use a hook or gloves...

the tub is about 3 feet long (im at school, i cant remember the exact dimensions)  and 18'' wide, 6'' deep  the ambient temp is about 78 - 82  the hot end is about 89 - 93 aspen substrate, hates hideboxes, it just poops on them and goes to the other end of the tank.  large corner stone water dish.

when i take it out of the enclosure, as soon as i touch it, it stops freakin out, but because of its previous behavior, im afraid to reax with it.  and i use gardening gloves to block its head when its hissy, im not stupid, ive been bitten enough to know better.  and ill post a pic after im done typing.  i will admit, the day i was going to feed it, which was about a three to four week interval between its last feeding, it was pissy as hell. i mean it was striking at the side of the tank and hissing so loud i could hear it down stairs.  (im assuming it was hungry) because after it ate, the hissing went down alot, but it still watched my every movement (but it always does that)

now, its normal temperment before the transfer...

very alert.  basically watches me move around the room, but not following me (like treking around the cage to get a better view) ((actually sometimes it did))  never has struck at me inside the enclosure when i go to pick it up.  usually hides in a corner behind the fake tree, always clings to something with the tail (im assuming thats normal, because my little one does it alot too)  hates being put back into the enclosure, always speeds back up my arm or hooks onto the nearest object it can find,  ALWAYS fed outside the enclosure, and has never denied a meal (that i can remember) k

idk waht else to tell you

its very tolerable to being held, i could take it out for 14 hours at a time and it wouldnt have a problem, it just sits around my shoulders or on my wrist/arm and watches things go by.

she struck at my cat once, because the damn cat wouldnt leave me alone and the snake was getting pissed (no damage was done, but the cat had an expression like "what the hell was that!")

if you want to know like,  shedding and feeding arangements, i guess i could post that too, but i ahve a class that i have to do an assignment fore, so heres the pic.

guess it didnt, huh.  lol

anyways, that was the old set up, now, the blue one on the bottom is on top of the three, and there is a glass aquarium on top of those keeping them down to prevent escape.  the little drawers is where the babies are, they wont be in there for long, coz i dont like it.  dont tell me anything about the drawers, or stacking, im well aware there are better methods.  you cant do squat with no money.  anyways

and now the whole thing is located in a small room, where the ambient temp is what i have posted earlier.  theres the set up.

Okay alot of people are saying in here and the blog that she may need a smaller tank/enclosure. could this be why Ducky is snapping at Kyrah? Ducky is a Red tail boa, and in a 20 long, she is about 3 1/2 feet I believe at last measurements.

Izzy

3' of BCI is not a lot of snake.... I have a 5mo hatchling that is pushing 2' already... she's in a 2'x2'x14" vision cage, and that is WAY too much cage for her but what I had onhand when I moved. I am working this weekend to get my 10gal cleaned and set up correctly for her, she hides all the time and I have to hook her out, I lost the lid clamps in the move and had to get new ones.... Anyways... rambling, sorry... Other than too much cage, the only other question would be if there are small children (younger than you) or the tubs in a high-traffic area where Kayloh feels overly pestered? It could be that s/he is just tired of all the traffic by the cage and when you go to get it out, it's already had just about enough of the traffic and faces "looking in"

no, they have their own room that i keep them in.  i open the door ocassionally just for kayloh because i swear he likes watching me walk around.  no children but me, and im not a child.  i have my own appartment, so there not much traffic.  hes almost 5' of bci, and is strong as a mofo.  (last night i took him out and was doing my homework with him around my neck, then i went to put him back and like i said at some point, i cant remember when, he hates being put back, and he accidently drug a tooth across the top of my hand.  ouch.  OUCH.  it didnt feel good =(.

but anyways, hes calmed down alot.  the hissing is less frequent.  come to think of it, he hasnt hissed since i posted this.  i think it was his time of the month...

honestly, (even though i know snakes arent social animals) sometimes i feel like he misses me.  like when i walk by the cage, he follows me to the end closest to where i am, or when i go in the cage, i dont have to fight to take him out, he goes right to me.  and i swear on all my money that he loves to cuddle (its probably because im warm) because he hangs on around my neck and balls up under my chin.  lol, he rested his head on my nose last night for like a half hour, but then i moved.

this became a long post, but i guess he was just moody.

thanks yall =))

Sounds to me like he's just having trouble adjusting to the tub, then... Having *just one* display enclosure can be fun (and decorative) and, if placed in a frequented room, it sounds like Kayloh may enjoy it. Just a suggestion, of course... =)
