Q: Do we have any other Natricine lovers out there!?

Hey guys,

You know, I was wondering, are any other keepers on this site full blown natricine-snake lovers such as I? In case you are unfamiliar with that term, natricine snakes are basically Garter snakes, Water snakes, Keelbacked snakes, European grass snakes and related species. Most of them have a very varied diet and are usually found within close proximity to a body of water, but not always. Many prefer fishes and amphibians as well as soft-bodied invertebrates such as earthworms as food. Both livebearers and egg layers are in this group, with thamnophis (true garter snakes) Storeria (dekay and red bellied snakes) and Nerodia (north american water snakes) giving live birth and Rhabdophis, Xenochrophis, Natrix and many others laying eggs. I plan to build my breeding business on natricine snakes and I am always looking to reach out to other keepers of these wonderful animals as well as recruit new ones! Haven't tried a garter or water snake before? You are missing out! My collection photos and youtube vids can vouch for that one! I know some people don't like snakes that are on the small side, but what many of them don't know is that a well kept female ribbon snake, or certain species of garter snake can and will exceed 3.5 feet in length!

So basically, what I am asking is:

are you a natricine snake lover?
Have you ever kept one or more of these snakes?
If not, would you ever consider it?!

I just saw some beautiful Puget Sound garters at a reptile expo a couple of weeks ago and now I'm thinking about adding some blue garters to my collection.

When I "got" into reptiles in the 90s, garters were kinda looked at like, "oh, wow, yeah, you have a garter? ooh. wow." and the REAL snakes were boas and ball pythons.

I've never quite understood that.

I'm still a huge fan of garters, the Puget Sound are absolutely beautiful, but I will forever be a fan of the local ones here in Ohio. Not a fan of the albinos, but garters in general are really gorgeous creatures.

sadly, they still are looked at by a lot of people that way. I am working to change the way people look at garters and it's actually working, at least at hamburg. One show I took a bunch with me and introduced a bunch of the dealers to them, and I got very positive responses. Last hamburg, my big cherry hypo florida banded water snake sweetie pie won the hearts of many, many showgoers. People just could not get over her color or how she literally just layed curled on my arms for hours behind the table! I like to call them bean bag snakes cause you can just flop them around in your hands like big bean bags and they just don't care, let alone move!!! And yes, you will see me next hamburg!! That show, I am picking up 2.3 of 3 different species of keelbacked snakes, Striped keelbacks, Checkered Keelbacks, and Triangle (red blotched) Keelbacks.

No

Yes

No

I've grown tired of the stuff that musks, bites, poos, or does all three at the same time..............Every one that I kept did one of the three..........I'll leave the poo flinging to the Monekys...........

I gotta a "garter snake bug" up my ass this summer when I saw one that was just so beautiful with a big bright orange stripe. (I think I emailed you at that time).  I took it in and kept it a while but it just wouldn't feed, and I didn't feel I had the patience to acclimate it to captivity if it wouldn't feed well.  And he was just so damn fast and wiggly.  So I put him back where I found him.

I've still thought about it.  I've wondered what water snakes are like to keep.

I read about making "fish milkshakes" and freezing them in ice cubes.  That sounded gross, but then it actually sounds very convenient compared to mice and rats.

well, fish milkshakes won't work because it will turn to liquid, i think what you were referring to was the fish/gelatin recipe. You can blend fish and gelatin together to make fish jello that can be sliced and frozen. It's very convenient and the snakes grow like wildfire on it!!!

Honestly, I personally have no interest in Natricine snakes specifically (I mean I do on the level that they are snakes)... but I think you would love a book I found: Mean and Lowly Things by Kate Jackson is a narrative of her field experiences doing herpetology reserch in the African Congo... but she is in fact a die-hard Natricine lover herself!  I think the book is absolutely awesome; very well-written and engaging!  I couldn't put it down, and finished it in about 2 days (this when my child was not quite 1.5 years old).

My first reptiles were garter snakes. I've lived in NW washington my entire life and they seem to be everywhere. When I was 9, I caught a handfull of babies and kept one for 4 1/2 years. (I'm not sure if thats a long time or not, but he ate like a champ.) His name was freddy.

He never musked me, and overall was probably one of the mellowest animals I've ever owned. Surprisingly, I haven't had anymore snakes.

I've kept garter snakes many a time- but never for a day or two as they were always ones I caught in the wild.  I think that may be why I'm not that interested in them compared to morelia- they're everywhere here... I don't have anything against them but I do like my pythons. :)

I never really thought much of them until I saw your collection.  Now I really want to get into them.  Do you have babies for sale yet, or are you still putting together breeding plans?  I think they'd be something fun and different.
