Jungle Carpet Python Care
|
|
I am thinking about picking up a jungle carpet python and a dumeril boa at my expo on sunday i got all the info i need for my boa but some things im not to sure on when it comes to the carpet python. like for one enclosure im thinking about using a plastic tub ive notice there great for maintaining humidity i want to use a heat pad at the bottom for a heat source do you think this will be good because they are arboreal ? also what are ideal temps and humidity in your opinion ? and any other info you feel i should know would be greatly appreciated? also while im here let me know what you guys think ideal temps n humidity are for a dumeril boa and any tips or adivice you think i should know thank you

I've kept quite a few carpets and for the most part they all have the same care. I kept my jungle in a sweater box size tub (though I'm sure he would have liked more climbing room), cool side at 80 and the hot side at 90-92F. The humidity in the room averaged 50% and I'd raise his a bit when he was shedding to around 70% by spraying the tub and putting his water bowl more on the hot side of the tank.
Carpets are very easy to keep and I'm sure you'll have no issue with him. He'll be fine in a tub with bottom heat and he'd also do great in a tub/tank with overhead heat (though humidity will be much harder to maintain in a tank). If you're getting a baby, a shoebox size tub would be great for a few months until he's well settled and eating great.

Didn't you just start keeping reptiles??? My advice to you would be to slow down.......I've seen it happen over and over....get a few snakes then they want to build a huge collection right away........... You do the right thing and ask for a lot of advice...that's good...but I would take it a little slower....get a little more experience with what you have and then move up....... just my 2 cents...............don't take this wrong...I'm not trying to be a jerk...........We're all probably a little guilty of buying up reptiles too fast.....learn from other pple's mistakes.....

also i have me and my brother that care for these animals so the care for them isnt much time consuming when you split it two ways throughout the years ive owned turtles ,lizards ,frogs and many different types of snakes including garters, kingsnakes,a few different types of pythons sometimes i ask you many questions even repeat them over lol im sorry for this but when it comes to my pets i'am very paranoid and i take every precaution i could to make sure they are in the best of health so no im not a beginner but im definetly not as experienced as you and i use this site to best of my advantage so i appreaciate your concern but i think i can handle a couple of more snakes as long as i have the room for them lol

I guess I had the impression that your boa was your first.................. I had a huge collection before....and I know the smaller collection I have now is much better maintained than before.....t's hard to choose not to buy more snakes....It's like a bad drug addiction

The best guide out there for carpet pythons, in my opinion, is Anthony Carponetto's Captive Care of Carpet Pythons.... www.acreptiles.com/carpet_python_care.htm
I don't own a jungle, but with my coastals and diamond/coastal crosses, they all love to perch. Though its certainly not required, you may find your carpet spends most of its time up high.
Only one is in a plastic tub, but they're doing fine. Humidity isn't a big deal with carpets- but if you live in a very dry place (like I do- Colorado), you will need to mist it.. daily, every other day? More often near a shed, but they're certainly not like GTPs.
Ideal heat for Carpets is 76-80 for the ambient temp and then 88-92 below/above the heat source.

I got into carpets back when the whole DiamondX Jungle fad was going on......I really didn't like them as much as other snakes I was into(personal preference) so I traded them for some blood pythons...... ...... They are really easy to care for....the only thing I didnt like was having to buy tiny little rodents to feed them as babies.........before the days of rodent pro.........
I think I was disappointed with them because mine never turned bright yellow and black

Back when i had carpets, i kept mine in the exo terra glass tanks. A heat mat on the underside towards the back and a small hermit crab heat mat towards the top of one side near a perch. Mid 80s down bottom and mid 90s around the perch. I used eco earth and bark as substrate. It was a fairly simple snake to maintain.
I didnt have a dumerils long enough to feel comfortable giving you any advice.

Since i didnt use a heat bulb, i was a ble to wrap a good deal of the lid in syran wrap and the latches still held the lid down so that the snake couldnt escape.

Mine do great in aquarium tanks but they are hardly ever on the ground. If you do totes, make it a tall one, and make sure you have plenty of stuff for them to climb on. They are very active and fun to watch. If they are about to shed I spray the inside of the tank every night and put damp towels across half the tank top, which adds some humidity. Otherwise don't worry too much about humidity, I think my snake room is about 40% and they're fine. Because they're off the ground so much, I use a red "Nightlight" heat lamp and just have under-tank heat under their hide (occasionally they go in there to digest).
Keep in mind they can be tempermental feeders, so when you get one don't be surprised if he doesn't eat for a few weeks. I got my older male a new ExoTerra tank and he didn't eat for a month; I put him back in his old aquarium and he was back to eating a week later. The young one I just got didn't eat for 3 weeks when I first got him. Just something to keep in mind.
