just a question in regards to the forum....so are we allowed to post pics of other animals beside herps?  it seems kind of counterintuitive to see birds and what not on a herp site....thanks for any replies

Good question, I was going to post something about that today. I personaly think it's called IHERP not iBIRD or iDOG, there are plenty of other social sites where people can put their other animals. When I log on I DONT want to see birds or fish or rats unless they are a feeder hanging out of a herp's mouth. Lets keep this a haven for reptile lovers not pollute it with all the other animals I personaly don't care about.

I personally would rather keep this about reptiles, but that's just me....

I don't think there's any harm in posting photos of your other pets.  After all, the forums, the blogs, the tracking, the whole rest of the site is for and about reptiles.  The photos of other pets are just an aside, kind of like talking about hobbies other than reptiles on your profile page.  If you are referring to the "new additions" snapshots on the side of the home page, just ignore them and they will be gone in a few minutes...this site is growing by leaps and bounds!

btw, my vote is for herps and only herps......nothing against other animals, just like herps the best.

When i joined the site i put my dogs up. I decided against it after a bit and i pulled them. I love my dogs. But they have nothing to do with this site. I think posting rats is a huge tease and birds are a stretch. But its not my site, so who am i to judge. People love their pets no matter what type of animal they are.

People can decorate their houses anyway they want. Doesnt matter much to me if they want to put up birds, dogs, fish or whatever strikes their fancy. Maybe they're looking for others with similar interests, not such a big deal. Well, I guess I may have to rethink this if there are a lot of cats posted. I sorta want to kick those things. Cats fire up my prey drive something fierce.

I'm sort of split on this. Yes I come on here to see herps and expect just to see herps, I log in a few times a day just to check out the new arrivals and members. On the other hand iHerp is unique. It's by far the friendliest community I've seen amongst it's members. Some of the arrogant and rude head bashing I see on other sites and forums is unbelievable and can easliy be a quick turn off. People love their other animals too and I'm sure they want to show them too. We have a Pug named Frank, yes Frank but I chose not to put him on here. I think it's important to keep that close friendly community feeling about this site. I know there are personal profiles but people like to show new additions.  Yooooo  Aaron... how about a small community corner section on the bottom right for Herp unrelated animals and topics where people can show their other new animals if they want, new cars, houses, girlfriends, babies!! what ever floats your boat. Ok I'm creating more work aren't I? Bad suggestion?

I asked this question long ago and the response was "NO DOGS ALLOWED" and even included a photo of a sign in his response email.  I get it though, but also like the suggestion of a community section too.  Being a developer (aka a code monkey) I also realize that sometimes tough decisions need to be made, in the end the herp features provide the most value to everyone.  If there a few spare cycles to add a community section it will be likely be used, but keeping the vision in focus is also important.  [Lots of words and nothing said - I could run for a political office.]

The Vision and focus on herps is definitely the most important and should take priority. Iherp is also overall a very clean and professional looking site. Don't mind my suggestion. That's just me trying to make all of the people happy all of the time. It's going to be my downfall one day I just know it......

I think only herps is the way it should be. Also throwing other animals in throws off the percentage of herps that are not currently classified.

The more I sit here and think about it the more I begin to agree.  There were some dogs shown a while ago but in a blog.

Makes no difference to me. If I see a dog or cat or bird or whatever on the newest animals thingie, I don't care. I like seeing people's dogs. OTOH, if it started to become a huge part of the site, it might be a turnoff. Bottom line, I think it would be Aaron's decision to make, as he is the one that pays for this fun place.

Bryan...good thing he did not send that to me. I'd send my GSD to bite his ass. :)

Just kidding.

You should send you GSD to bite his ass anyhow. I'll lend him my sleeve and bring my Malinois. I bet the can convince him.. ;)

Lol...Malinois are beautiful dogs. I was going to say I'd send my two Bulldogs, but they are not bitey :)

I joined this site because it is dedicated to reptiles, I personally would like to keep it that way and not dilute it with other pets, as someone already said there are other sites for dogs, cats etc.... just my opinion

Reptiles Only! That is why we all joined in the first place. Just one mans opinion.

Ultimately, if this site still serves its purpose, then does it matter? Theres one mammal for every 100 herps, if that. And you can still go about your business of checking out new additions, new members, tracking, and of course networking. So some people like dogs and birds and *shudder* rats as pets. They arent doing any injustice by being here. Im actually surprised Aaron hasnt poked his head in here though. Maybe he wants to steer clear of this fray.

You guys are completely awesome.

First off, I want to say in all seriousness, even though iHerp is my "site" or whatever, it's really not... this belongs to the community, and I've gotta say, I'm amazed at how great everyone has been. There's very little condescension, very little posturing, and it's an amazingly helpful community ... especially with Answers. We all are learning, and to be able to ask a question, genuinely, and get help from others in a non-confrontational way is simply outstanding. So keep it up, you guys are doing great :)

Now, onto the topic at hand... I've stayed out of this because I wanted to see what the community felt about it, without influence from me. iHerp isn't a dictatorship, I like to know what people think, and I especially appreciate stuff like this. It seems that the majority feel it should remain herps only, and I predominantly agree. If it were to get out of control, based upon the input here, I'd probably make a statement of sorts... If it were 100 dogs to 100 reptiles, that would completely change the context of the site. You'd have people with no reptiles asking dog questions ... that's not what we're here for.

Great question, thansk much for posting this Chris.

And don't give me any points for this. I can conjure up my own points MWAHAHA HAAHH A HAHA AHAH AHA
*cough*
Sorry, I had something in my throat.

There is a possibillity that if  a off topic corner were created, it could blow out of proportion, herps only

well, it definitely looks like the overwhelming concensus is herps only.....not much of a surprise i guess.

honestly, they are my babies, and i have seen pictures of dogs and such on here as well. i apologise if you are offended by it but if you have a problem with the fact that i include all my animals in my life, or with anyone else who has the same feelings for that matter, you need to contact us directly instead of putting our buisness out for everyone to see. If anyone else is offended they can contact us directly. And until I am asked by Jef personally, my babies are staying where they are.

srry i was thinkig aaron and said jef, oops srry jef.  :) but i actually saw more "I dont care" attitude for it then I did herps on herps. they are right, i did post m birds looking for another with a simular intrest. My life is not 24/7 herps, sorry if that isnt the norm on here, I do have a life outside the computer. I also have a dog, and a kitten aside from my 3 birds (my macaw I havent put up) and my 3 snakes and tortoise. But I love them all equally. However, I think its unfare that you call us out on such a trivial subject. All of the things on here are set up for herps. I dont do any tracking, or breeding with my birds, I dont ask questions. Their pictures are up simply to be there, to advertise that I am a bird lover, that I would like to find another tiel owner on here and talk to them. To express other intrests, aside from my reptiles. But I stand by what I said. Until it is a grounded rule, or until aaron asks of it, my tiels will stay where they are.

i definitey wasn't "offended" by the other animals or anything like that......it just seems a little wierd that non herps are on a herp site, thats all.  i have a dog and i love her, but i just don't feel the need to post her on a herp site.  but also, i'm not losing sleep over it or anything,, just wanted to see what the concesus was about this topic.  no offense given or taken.

I apologise for jumping on you like that. It had seem almost like you were calling me out, like I was back in high school  :)  I certainly havent seen too many other birds on here, and this happened to be posted right after I put up the pictures of my birds. No i havent found an iAvi, or a iFeline, than again I havent thought to look for them. I dont intend to post the rest of my babies. I just wanted to see if there was any other iel owners out there whoes brains I could pick at. I respect your concern and again apologise for jumping in here like that. I will probably be removing my birds witing the next few days when I have a little more time. Yes, I agree this is a herp site, but it is nice to see a patch of fur or feather amongst all the scales...and its not being eaten. :)

I think that was a very good Forum question. I was tempted to post pics of my hedgehogs and my new puppies here. But the idea of having a herp dedicated site is awesome! Puppies pics are on DoggySpace.com

I don't think dogs or other animals should be put in the section with the animals that are registered on here. However if you want to blog about your dogs, cats, horses, whatever...then feel free..post a picture..throw a party.  I just don't think they should be in the registered animals section.  they aren't reptiles.

Hi i'm james and i'm a snake-aholic

I agree if i want to track your dogs progress i'll go to a dog forum, but the truth is most people don't track dogs, and cats. Herps are tracked. I have 2 dogs, and one snake, but i come here for snake advice, and i don't mind other types of reptiles on here because this site isn't just for snakes, or lizards, it's for all herp lovers. And most of us like more than 1 type of herp even if we only own one. I hope this site takes off because i believe it will and it's got a great future ahead of itself. One the site gets organized and bugs get sorted out it's gonna be a blast.

Thanks for letting me share...

I believe this site is meant for Herps only! hence the name IHERP! I have many pets that are not herps that I enjoy just as much but I don't post them on this site. My French Bulldog and Miniature pinscher are on Dogchannel.com and my Blue Fronted Amazon is on Birdchannel.com. My point is that there are numerous sites out there that are appropriate for all your critters. When I'm on this site I really don't care to see your poodle, goldfish, or pet Sasquatch either! Let's keep it pure, that's my opinion.
