Rat Breeding & Euthanization
|

ok heres the thie deal i want to start breeding my own rats for snake food rather than getting them from a pet store but my snakes only feed on f/t so my question is what is the best or most humane way to take care of these guys before they go in the freezer?

OK, I've never done it before but I've looked into it and the most humane way is to build a CO2 chamber and use a CO2 tank or dry ice. If you google "CO2 chamber" you'll get a bunch of how-to websites and here's one of the better ones:

I agree, CO2 is the best way. Here is another link on easy construction. Good luck.

We use co2 get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid, some rubber tubing, a tank fitting that takes the tubing (cheap) and drill a hold in the lid...cake. LOL ok to use dry ice, drill holes in a rubber maid sandwich box and drop that in a 5 gal bucket.
p.s. have you consider Kimi eating mice?

I do Co2, also. I use dry ice (as my friend can get it from work for free) and a cooler. Put the rats in a container that fits in the cooler. Add dry ice in a bowl and pour on some cold water. Leave the top of the cooler open for about a minute so that the carbon dioxide can take the place of the regular air. Close the cooler and leave them for 15-20 min. When you open it again make sure and NOT stick your head over the top while you take the rats out. Bag and freeze.

I inject CO2 into my fish tanks so i just took the airline tubing and put the rats in about a 10g garbage bin and cranked the CO2 open...since CO2 is heavier than air it sank to the bottom and i just waited about 20min(i did use a lid but it was just a top to a tub)

Bash them on the head, thats the quickiest. Dry ice ,water, and a bucket works good too. C02 also works very well, or n20
