Q:

shipping large reptiles
|
|
This might not be the appropriate spot for this question but i am having the hardest time finding an answer to this question...
I am looking for a way to ship large reptiles other than Delta.. they have a long approval process and I have a 120 pound snake that has to be shipped soon.. All the contacts I have made say it is gonna be 500 dollars or more to do this... there has to be a reasonable way to do it.. i was told that I could try to find an approved shipper and use their approval but cant find one anywhere close to where i am located in Minnesota.
Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

they can only approve snakes 6 feet and under... i am awaiting a call from them to see if there is another avenue, but i have a feeling they are going to tell me to call Delta as well

Delta is the only shipper I know of that will deal with any thing over 50 lbs and still do overnight. To ship you will need an account or a business to use. Be prepared for it to cost a chunk. There is a reason that most people will not ship large animals, it costs too much and unless you are a zoo, you can't get a reputable shipping company to deal with it.
I have actually considered starting a business dealing with the transporting of large reptiles....

I think Delta would be your only shipping option. I'd contact the large retic breeders and see what they've got to say. Delta's probably going to be pretty expensive too, its $225 to ship a 2# ferret in a #100 vari kennel. I would not be at all surprised if its $400 or more to ship your animal via Delta. Its probably cheaper to meet the buyer part way! Where's the animal going?

Forget SYR. No snake shipping through them until further notice - probably never again, IMO. Delta is your only option but as stated, it will be costly and starts with a site visit fee that varies with the distance you are from the nearest airport. I am 60 miles from my airport so they are charging me $180 just to do the site visit. Ouch!

Everyone else answered it. Delta is the only option, other than getting someone (or yourself) to drive.

I have used NorthWest Air Cargo to ship a large boa, this was back in '01... but there was no approval process to go through and everything went great. I believe Alaska Airlines also ship animals via air-freight but not sure if you need to get approved. I cannot use Delta because I am not a business and you must be to get certified. Another option would be to find someone near you that already has an account and see if you can use them. Good luck!

I have no clue if you solved this but its still open so: Have you tried ReptilesExpress.com? They are approved to ship snakes. I'm not sure if there is a size limit but I'm sure you can call and check with them regarding this.
