Leopard gecko issues!
|
|
Soo... I am fostering a leopard gecko atm. And for reasons I cannot explain in public I am not allowed to take him to a vet so please do not tell me to do that.
Anyways... We noticed issues with this guy when he had some stuck shed on his head and his eyes were closed. We thought it was probably just due to the shed and let him soak for a bit to work it off. Well the shed came off no problem and when it did it pulled some nasty yellow gunk out of one eye.... after which he was able to open it slightly... but not entirely...
So, noticing that he was going to need some more work I offered to bring him home for some concentrated attention. a couple soaks and warm compresses over the eyes later i pulled some more nasty gunk out of his eyes...
it's pretty gross....
he is still not opening them and one appears to be swollen just behind the eye....
After consulting my reptile medicine book I THINK I have discovered the problem!
All the symptoms this little leopard gecko is showing correspond with a vitamin A deficiency....
problem is... the best way to treat this is with a subcu fat soluble vitamin a injection.... which I need a vet for and as said that is not possible at this point in time... hopefully it will be soon but not until i get permission.
So until then....does anyone have any tips or even any idea what i am talking about?

I have never experienced anything like that with my leos. (thankfully) I hope he gets better! It sounds like he is in good hands now! Kudos to you for caring!

I just noticed him out and about and decided to try feeding him again. previously he had no interest in food but now he is hunting!
So i took everything out of the enclosure, crippled some crickets and he is tracking em down! very slowly but he is getting them! so that is very encouraging ^.^

Oh yay!!!!! Eating is good! I've used waxworms on picky eaters too. It's like crack for leos. LOL

yeah i had thought about getting some to help boost him back to a healthier weight...he isn't terribly thin but because he wasn't eating before he lost a bit of weight. if he will keep eating now though hopefully he will get better. I am feeding his crickets vitamin a rich foods as well as dusting them so maybe over the next week we will see some improvement!
I will continue to pull this "cellular debris" out of his eyes as well...

I would agree. Feed him up with some wax worms and anything else he will eat and get some vitamin dust on the feeders. Make sure the temps are good too.
Good luck.

I've seen that in a couple of very hard-up foster leos that have had poor sheds over a very long period of time. the buildup of skin over the eyes leads to some infected gunky crud that lives between the eyelid and the eye.
I've had this removed by vets - then spent about 10 days or so flushing with a weak chlorhex solution. do you have anything uber-gentle to flush the eyes, to help lubricate them? if you don't have any chlorhex and can't get some, maybe even just sterile saline from the drug store?

So I've been meaning to post this for awhile, but I've just not had the time. I keep meaning to update my animals pics let alone other things. I saw a really bad case of this a few weeks back on a gecko some girl brought in and just left on the front counter, the pics speek for themselves but I have to say,
they were not pretty to deal with. I will add that he is doing fine now and eats on his own with no problem surprisingly, but he has to have help shedding around his eyes. But thought I'd share pretty crazy.

I'll add there wasn't much left of his eyes, but he still has them, and I have no idea how long he was like this...but it was for some time judging by how many layers of skin that was attached to the outside of the caps...

Just keep cleaning the eyes like your doing until your able to get her to a vet. The main thing is that she is eating. I had a gecko that had one eye closed and it was full of gunk. When i took her to the vet he said she had sinus problems. He gave me drops for her and it went away. Every once in a while it would come back and I would treat it or take her back in if I needed a refill on the meds. GL and she seems to be getting way better quick!
