Rhino iggy taming?
|
|
Any tips? I thought a rhino iggy would be a peace of cake to tame seeing all the nice big calm docile ones.... APPARENTLY NOT.. so I have a mean cb baby that I can't even pick up out of his cage because he opens his mouth, strikes and whacks his tail..tips please! Thanks

lol it's still an iguana....
You have to have extreme amounts of patience with igs, work very slowly, keep him somewhere that he sees you and get used to your presence. if you can approach the cage without him having a heart attack then you can open it and put your hand inside for a few minutes..don't do anything just put your hand in and leave it still. do this until he stops reacting so much to your hand..then you can slowly start moving your hand towards him it's in the tank or better yet get a treat that he likes (my green ig loved bananas and hibiscus) and hold it like an offering to get him to come to you. Keep on with these VERY slow and patient advances and in time you will be able to hold him and he will be like the big calm ones you see. It takes a VERY long time though (though i have heard rhinos are a lot more difficult than greens... cubans are apparently the best)
I had my green iguana just about year before i had to give him away and he was JUST beginning to approach my hand with food in it.

We have a pair of Rhinos, about 2 yrs old and I am doing the gentle hand approach. They are still psychos! The female will eat from my hand but I offer her stuff thats big enough that my hand doesn't become part of the treat and the male I am still feeding off of tongs because he has horrible aim. I half wonder if he isn't doing it on purpose to watch me jump. However I can take them both out of the cage as long as I move slow and don't startle them. Once they are out they generally stay pretty mellow unless they get startled. I have also found that a nice warm shower practically puts them to sleep. We swaddle them like babies after wards to trim their nails. They still hiss and tail whip if they get spooked and will definetly bite if they get worked up. My green Iggy is like a baby and closes his eyes when you pet him and my cuban is a food hound and will walk up your arm for a treat.

I've noticed that ANYTHING that has to do with activity in there cage they become very mean but once removed from the cage for handling there fine. There very cage agressive buggers.

Wow - this is my first minute on this site and I have an almost 2 YO rhino and am dealing with the same thing as all of you. I think you almost have to just let them be lizards for the first couple of years (maybe more). I have never raised one from a baby but havehad one adult and been around many adults of varying levels of tolerance for handling. If I surprise mine he frieks out. If i put my hand in the cage he blasts me and frieks out. If I disturb him in his hide box and grab him he frieks but settles down very quickly, just like some of you are describing. I have found in the last few weeks if I let him do his initial friek he will let me approach him and handle - still not too smooth but a definite improvement.
Any thoughts on disturbing the hide box to just grab and get them out, then work with them? I wonder if that violates their comfort zone, and will make them crazier in the future.
Rhinos are the most interesting animal I have worked with - they are amazing.
Thanks, Mike
