Q: Breeding Nicaraguan/Dwarf boas
Posted By:

I'd like to hear from people who have bred and/or know people who have bred dwarf boas. In particular I'd like to know the usual size and age of the females used and the number of live young born to these smaller (but just as awesome) boas.

I know based on information from a forum I frequent that the recommended size for Colombians is around 6 ft and not less than 3 years old. I've seen adult female Nicaraguans under 5 feet that are proven breeders, so I know there are some differences there. I've also read about some breeders having success with 2 1/2 yr old Nics if they're large enough come season (but I'm not sure what "large enough" is).

Anyway, I'd just like to hear from folks who've been there. Thanks in advance!

For me, with my columbian Bci (or normal boas) I actually go for at least four years old, and at least six feet long.  Since dwarf species don't get as "long" as the standard Bci, I tend to wait for my dwarfs to be at least 5 years old, and healthy in girth for "their individual length" at time of breeding.  Honey, my Hogg island boa, is at 4 feet, 5 inches, and eats medium rats well.  However, she is pushing 6 years old, and clearly doesn't want to grow further.  My other dwarf species haven't hit breeding age yet, though, so we will see with them :)

I wish I could find a weight reference for breeding size of the various dwarfs. I just have found references to them reaching sexual maturity at 3-4 years of age.

I'd email Jeff Hartwig.  He used to breed the dwarfiest of the dwarfs, the Sonoran Desert Boas.  And he seems like a nice guy when I see him at shows.
