Weather Change = Iguana Appetite Loss?
|
|
Could a weather change effect a Iguana's appitite? Recently had a weather change in area and my iguana hasn't really ate since. Just curious if it is a for of hybernation? My local weather changed and since, my Iguana hasn't ate. He took like 2 bites of leafy food today and that's it. He also won't eat out of his food dish, only hand fed!

Definitely, weather effects all animals even if you have them in a controlled environment and their temps and humidity don't change at all, atmospheric pressure or maybe even just the smell of something in the air (like rain) will effect them.

He is only 5 inches from head to vent. So, he's currently in a 40 gal breader. He has a UVB, and heat lamp. At night I have a red bulb heat lamp going. His cool zone stays around 65 degrees and his warm side is in the 80's with a hot spot of 90-95, depending on how high up his tree he climbs. Humidity is constant around 70% and when misted it actually goes up to 100%. I have the soil with bark along the bottom and a couple of live plants to go with his fake plants. I'm considering taking the soil and bark out and putting in a carpet....go idea or not? Thanks....

Also, I just got home from work and cut him up some veggies. He ate 4 pieces of carrot, 8 pieces of squash and a couple of pieces of lettuce. Guess he might be feeling better?!?!

I wouldn't use carpet if it was the last thing on earth... hate carpet... the only thing its good for is flooring in bedrooms...
Your set up sounds good. What exactly do you feed him? You mentioned carrots, how often do you feed those? What kind of lettuce are you feeding? Are you feeding anything else? Are you using calcium supplements?

He eats carrots maybe twice a week. Squash, zuccini, Romane lettuce, mango, green grapes, red and green bell peppers. Using calcium powder twice a week.

Hmm.. everything sounds fine with your set up and diet so I would imagine weather is the culprit!
Might stop feeding grapes... I recall reading something bad about them somewhere but I can't remember what it was lol so maybe just double check those but other that.... maybe feed a few more dark leafy greens, collards and mustard greens, mine always loved dandelion greens.
But yeah everything else sounds good so it' might just be the weather change, as I mentioned before, they can certainly sense atmospheric pressure changes far better than us and storms or low and high pressure systems may cause them to have short behavioral changes.
If he is eating again now and returned to normal then I wouldn't worry, if he continues to eat very little or not at all then you may want to get him to a reptile vet and get him checked out.

If nothing's changed about his set-up and how he's fed, yeah, it's probably just the season change.
On another note, it sounds like you need to work a bit on his diet. More variety, less fruit (squash seems to be more fruit-like than veggie in the nutrition department), and more greens--not just lettuce, and especially not just ONE KIND of lettuce. That's bad, very bad. greenigsociety.org/ has an excellent "food information chart"... Basically, what's good or not-so-good to feed and how often this or that food should or can be fed. It also has other great information on Iguana care... It wouldn't be a bad idea to go through the whole website to make sure you're on the right track with your iggy.
Good luck!
