Q: Best Crested Gecko Cages?
Posted By:

I was just wanting to get a few opinions on Crested Gecko cages.  I wanted to build my own but the cost of acrylic is crazy!  I've been looking at Zilla's acrylic atrium but it seems a little small 12" X 18" X 20".

We use an Exo Terra 18” x 18” x 24” (WxDxH) for a pair of our geckos and they are happy and thriving.

I have my female in a planted 18x18x24 Exo and she uses every inch of the space.  My smaller male just wasn't happy in his, so I downgraded him to an 18 cube and he's much happier (i.e. out and about more, eating more consistently, etc).  I know some people who really like to use these screen & plastic cages, but I personally prefer the Exos.

I like the Exo Terra cages but they are a bit pricey ($125-$225 depending on size).  That is why I was looking at the Zilla Acrylic Atrium.  I've seen the Zilla cage for as little as $39.99 shipped (12" X 18" X 20").

The acrylic atriums are plenty big for Crested Geckos, I used them for 1.1 and 1.2 groups. I like them but they are hard to keep nice and clear if you have hard water. The water will blur the acrylic and you have to be careful when scrubbing as it does scratch easily. Other than that I like them. Exo terras work great too!

You can usually find Exo Terras significantly cheaper than pet store prices at reptile shows/expos.  I don't think I've ever paid more than $75-$80 for an 18x24.

If you want to build your own aquarium- I would suggest against Acrylic.

Since cresteds need humidity, the acrylic will absorb the moisture and warp pretty soon. There are a few threads about this on the pangeareptile.com/forums cages & terrariums section about this problem.

Which sucks, because I had access to huge cheap sheets of acrylic that I almost bought.. Glad I didn't!

That is the first time I have ever heard anything about acrylic absorbing water???  Are you sure about that?  Acrylic is basically the same as plexiglass.  Acrylic is used to make large aquariums (I had one).

I've never heard of acrylic warping but I have heard of them getting cloudy or yellowing with age. I use the R-Zilla atriums and really like them. Plenty big for a single adult gecko and easy to move around for cleaning. I haven't had any problems with them yet.

We used to spend a ton of money on Exo Terras and we still use them today. However, we recently switched our 1.2 breeding groups of Crested Geckos over to larger, clear Sterlite Containers on plastic shelves from Home Depot . Although the plastic is not as clear for display purposes, they are extremely light weight and so much easier to keep clean. Our Crested Geckos absolutely love these setups because they retain a higher humidity and it gives them some extra privacy, too. There are a LOT of creative things you can do inexpensively with Sterlite or Rubbermaid containers and they should not be overlooked!

I keep mine all in the exoterra explorariums, and throw them outside next to my chameleons for natural sunlight on good days.  Easy to clean and mist (just hose it!) and mine are doing pretty excellent.

In Rhacodactylus by Philippe de Vosjoli, Frank Fast, and Allen Repashy, they recommend the Reptariums (similar concept as the explorarium, just in a traditional rectangular cage shape).  With my screen cage I have a couple live plants and a magnetic ledge with moss in it for humidity as needed but honestly I rarely find them in the most humid areas.

And I think it's pretty - my roommates joke it's like having a tropical canary cage hanging off our back porch!

I have a lage mix, I have aquariums, I have exos, I have zilla acrylics, and I use tubs. Most of my colony is in tubs, but I have to say I do love the zilla acrylics and do plan to invest in more of these in the future. They are easily stackable, have inserts so if you want to do a planted viv you can easily do so, and although humidity can be an issue with 2 screens on it, it is very easy to block off one of them to still allow for ample airflow, yet not let out too much humidity.

Does anyone have an opinion about the Zoo Med cages?  I like how it has one door that opens the entire front of the cage.  They seem very well made.  The best price that I can find on the 18" X 18" X 24" is $99.99.  I need multiple cages so I was hoping to find something a little cheaper.

Good deals on here for terraniums http://www.pangeareptile.com/store/reptile-cages.html or make your own from steralite tubs and window screen http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?116109-DIY-Crested-Gecko-Tubs

Maybe it is just a different type of acrylic then?

I really like the hanging chameleon cages, the ones that look like a spring with nylon screen wrapped around them.  I think that they are zoo med, but my females love them and they hang from the ceiling, saving space also. The double door exterras are always nice too though
