I have a albino red tail and he has turnned very aggresive for no reason. He has been trying to biting at everyone who tries to pick him up. Even me and i have had him for a year and a half. I was wondering what could cause this or if this is a normal thing.

Is he in a busy area of the home?

double check your husbandry with an appropriate care sheet.

no we havent done anything to his cage and no he isnt in a high traffic area. And no he doesnt have mites, we have checked.

His temp is normal, he has water, His cage is at the right humidity, and he has eaten normally. Everything has been the same for a year and in the last two weeks he has started not wanting to be handled.

Is he in the midst of a shed cycle?

Has it been healthy the whole time you've had it? A buddy of mine got a boa from some place I have no idea where. But it was sick as a dog when he got it. He could hold it he could do anything he wanted with it. But once it became healthy again the snake showed it's true colors and started striking out and biting everything. Basically it was a wild snake.

Has he been injured? There could be something hurting inside causing him to be aggressive. Is it possible for someone to be teasing or hurting him when you are not there? Also if you handle too often they can become stressed and start biting.

Albinos are almost impossible to tell when they are ready to shed. I have a kahl strain albino with very light saddles to begin with, and the only way I can tell when he's ready to shed is when he turns into an asshole...just saying. How long has be been bitey?

Keep him out of light, make sure he has a hide big enough to crawl up into and get away from it all if need be. A "safe place" where he can feel comfortable and unbothered. Put a live pothos plant in his cage. They are inexpensive and provide comfort. Let him be for a whole week and very quietly change his water/substrate when need be. After a week offer food, wait 4 days and then pull him out with a snake hook or similar device and put him on your lap and cover him with a blanket. Put your hands on top of the blanket and try to make him feel secure. He may just be stressed out and pissed off. Animals can get moody too. What makes them special is their own personalities and emotions. :)

he bit me for the first time about 2 weeks ago. i was doing some poop clean up and i had him out and he was roaming my couch then after his breif freeness i picked him up and he nabbed me he didnt latch on just hit me with his mouth open. didnt think much of it the next day i checked on him to make sure he was ok picked him up and he was fine didnt bite or anything. i do notice a pattern though it seems to happen when he knows he is going back in his tank. it happend again the next time as i was putting him in his tank. and afterwards i know hes still stressed cause he will squeeze my arm super tight so i cant put him in.after that i cleaned his entire tank checked his temps everything. it really bums me out he was such a sweetheart before this happened. also i dont think hes about to shed he usually will get a little saggy around his neck for 2 or 3 days before he sheds and his tail saddles get really pale orange. also he has never refused a meal or been sick also in the year and a half ive had him

well to me it does sound like sheding. i don't know about the behavior of boas since i got my first today, but if its every time being put back into the cage then maybe it needs more space, i would try moving the tank to another spot, depending on were in the house he is, might not help but see what happens.

You have had him long enough to know if something isn't right with him. If he was my snake I would take him to the vet, there might be something wrong you can't see. Then you have ruled out anything physicaly wrong with him causing the stress.

It could also be that he's ready to move up to the next feeder size and he's letting you know he's less than thrilled with being "starved" lol... silly snakes :-)

I would have to probably disagree with the hunger theory.....  If it's a 2009 already eating 1 jumbo rat every 10 days it is getting more than enough food.....   99% of aggression stems from stress of some sort.....  start making a list of ANYTHING that has changed since the change in behaviour.....  no matter how insignificant it may seem to be..... any new snakes??   changes in husbandry,,,,, etc etc etc...

there are some boas that just have changes in attitude when they mature.... he is getting close to sexual maturity.....  I have a few males that are a bit fiesty  when I the breeding season rolls around...... they shift gears completely and have nothing on their mind but mating... some of them even refuse food ....Personally I wouldnt bring a boa to the vet for a change in temperament.... If the boa is otherwose robust and healthy.. but that's just me.......  ypu also can't rule out the possibility that you may just have a boa that is going to have a nasty temperament......  this isnt that common, but it happens... Or he may just not like being handled.......  SOme boas just end up being look but dont touch boas.......

This is a long shot, but what about new pets ,you or someone close to you, also fragrances ,any construction of any sort going on (fumes) and you maybe transporting an unfamiliar scent  that he doesnt know or may feel threatened as a result, hide a box  thats not too big, enough for him to curl up in and feel secure-when you do find out please post results ,its got me stumpedFoot in mouth-Good Luck!!

Has it been unusually hot or cold in your house? New girlfriend/boyfriend who changed the thermostat? The summer here in the US has been pretty hot this year, and my kings get grouchy when the house gets either warmer or colder than normal. They hate change....

I have a blood python that was tame as a puppy when I first got here and in the last 3 weeks she's been giving me a hefty dose of 'tude. +1 to Reptaruim and +1 to Izzy. I gave her space (a bigger enclosure, in fact), handled her calmy and gently, and moved her up to the next sized rat. Also, more baths (I swear she thinks she's a water snake). She's a happy girl again :)

In any case, I've had several boas do this to me. If you're sure you haven't changed anything and you're doing everything right, it's just a phase or a shed. My nicest baby snake tells me he's in shed before I can even tell (he's a Sunglow). And after that, he's my bff again lol. GL!! I hope you figure out what's up :)
