Q: Looking for rodents on the West Coast
Posted By:

With Rodent Pro no longer shipping via Greyhound, we're looking for another source of feeders on the West coast to limit shipping costs. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestion of suppliers they use?

Our order is normally for over a 1000 rodents of mixed sizes as my friend supplies quite a few people in our Herp club and I tag along on her orders to keep costs down.

The main thing to keep in mind is that the sizes of rats need to be comprable to the rat sizes from Rodent Pro - i.e  a large rat needs to be at least 175-274g

I'm hoping that someone in the iHerp community can save me time when it comes to finding a new supplier!

Have you tried Slippery Creek Ranch? You can order through him, and pick up either in Enumclaw (at his facilities) or at Dr. Maas' clinic in Bothell.  He's a bit more pricey than RodentPro, but good quality.  I emailed Rodent Pro directly about the Greyhound, and they're saying that fedex shipping will be cheaper - but I feel that pain too - 2 boxes instead of one greyhound box.

While Billy may be a good option, I don't know that he can supply the amount of rodents that we need. I'll suggest him as an option though!

In doing the math, with UPS as shipper, we found that the cost of a large or jumbo rat would jump to about what we're charging people now. If that's the only option, it's still cheaper than buying them anywhere else..still, sucks that Greyhound isn't an option anymore (through no fault of RodentPro - Greyhound has reduced the number of trips and the nearest Greyhound depot is over 100 miles from RP...)

Try micedirect.com Their prices are excellent and customer service is the best in my experience. You'll have to pay shipping but their prices are so good it balances out.

I looked into buying from Billy a while ago, and he wasn't able to supply what I needed either. Both in such a large amount, or things like rat pinkies. Apparently he doesn't have enough breeders to sell off whole litters of pinks for feeders, or something along those lines.

Why don't you buy from Jenn? I know she gets her feeders from Rodent Pro, but at least she gets em, and she's local.

I have known Billy for at least 4 years and by no means has he ever been reliable. I still buy from him at local shows when its convenient and easy for me but i would not trust or expect him to come through for anything. It is a little tough here lately. I have been just getting them wherever i can, here and there so i dont have to pay shipping. Good luck.

Brie - It's Jenn and I that are looking for another supplier, if we can find one. She gets all of her rodents shipped via Greyhound because of the shipping cost..and now that RP isn't able ship via Greyhound the cost is going to be quite a bit more. If we can find someone closer, it wouldn't raise the cost of rodents all that much - though if we can't, they will still be cheaper than buying them anywhere local!

You could try icecoldmice.com but several people including myself have not been able to get ahold of her. She is who i was getting them from. Dont know what happened to her. I dont know where RP is located but i believe there is a rodent supplier in CO.

I buy my rodents through American Rodent Supply (ARS) - they are located in Indianapolis, and won't ship unless the order is at least $100, but they have very good packaging, with lots of insulation and dry ice.  I think due to your location that they could deliver to you in 48 hours.

I just got my latest order this morning, only about 15 hours after I placed the order!  They promised 24 hours.  :)

If you are interested, here is their website: http://www.americanrodent.com/     ...just click on the "American Rodent Supply" logo at center  :)
Otherwise, good luck finding a local supplier.  I kinda went to ARS after I gave up on my local guys.

Deb I've ordered from the Mouse Factory with good results before. I don't know what the shipping cost might be for a large order though.

Thanks, everyone!  After doing some research and price comparisson, I came to two conclusions:

1) there needs to be a frozen rodent supplier on the west coast..anyone up to starting that business?
2) We placed a test order with Big Cheese Rodent Factory. I'll let ya know how it goes!
